Classic Z folks,

This is just a note to invite anyone that is near the VIR racetrack to come out next weekend, April 15-17. There will be a lot of great racing and we'll have our E Production 240z. We have stiff competition in the powerful BMW of Sam Moore and the Lotus/Caterham of Kevin Leigh. We are also debuting our new Quaiffe Rocket gearbox, so here comes left foot braking and no clutch!!

Call or email if you'd like to get in free on my team. Hope to see you there.

Greg Ira

I would love to but I am a bit tied up this coming weekend. Thanks for the offer and best of luck with the competition! I will be looking forward to photos, videos, and reports of the new transmission.

Hi Terry,

The BMW is in it's newer 2.5L trim. They got 200 lbs off the 2.8 model and from what I have heard, almost the same horsepower, somewhere a good ways north of 300. We wrecked into each other again. He's 3 seconds off my pace and just blocks me in the corners. The last race he took the front half off my car and won, this time we got together and he spun and I won. That was in the first race where I started sixth because of a qualifying issue. In the second race I was on pole and walked the dog on him. That car just doesn't handle very well yet. Did you know that Kevin Leigh is building one too? The new trans shifted OK but I am not sure about the gain vs the weight penalty. Then again, we could never get down to 2150 lbs anyway.

Thanks for the update. How anyone can be 3 sec a lap slower, block all session, and at the end of the day come out feeling good about it is beyond me. This seems to happen too often, not cool.

By my calculations you have a 108 lb weight penalty with the dog ring box? Not too bad I suppose if you couldn't make the minimum anyway. Are you running a 1.8 1st gear? If so, how is it starting off from a standstill?

I have a dog box in my car with a 1.81 first gear. Getting started is not too bad if the car is straight and you can safely take off a little aggressively. The main problem is getting to pre-grid when there is traffic and people not watching for cars. Hearing the dogs slam back and forth when you do not have a load on the gears is not pleasent. Most race starts are fast enough to not have to worry about the tall first gear.

Thanks much Terry. I recently picked up a 4pd Jerico, which currently has a 1.8 1st in it, and already have it mated to a t5 bell housing. At least for me, race starts in 2nd on the ZX OEM box (1.8) w/3.70 rear were phenomenal, so I'm not too worried there. Nobody could touch me. I'm kicking myself now because I never tried taking off in 2nd with that box and the car is now in pieces!

You will never want to go back to a datsun box after you use the Jerico. I would bet your lap times will be alittle faster with the better gear splits and the quicker shifts. Good Luck.

Yeah, the production guys claim 1-2 seconds almost guaranteed. The spur gears have a lower parasitic drag too, IIRC about 3% over the Helicals. What kind of box are you running? Clutch type??

I have a Jerico. I bought mine from Roush Yates. Great people to work with. They quoted $200 for a complete service and the price of a gear if I need to change a ratio. I use the clutch for down shifts. Much better than my datsun close ratio boxes.
