ugggggh!!!! i was messing with the Z now i have a problem. i put my 5 speed i had from my 72 its a 79 ZX 5 speed. anywho i hook it all up everything goes in fine and well till.................

i go to replace the center panel and the shifter is right at the top of the cut out area for the gear shift.

wtf gives???

i didnt have this prob with my 72. how can i get this to work with out leaving my center console off and having to cut a larger hole in my car.

its on the lift as we speak, and i have to have it out of the garage tonight!!

BTW mine is a 71 240Z build date 5/71

Yup, you gotta do a wee bit of trimming. Your 71 came with the early A model trans with the "monkey-motion" shifter linkage. The 72's and later came with the better B model transmission with the shifter mounted on the case itself. The A model shifter sat further back than the B models.

i went back down to the garage. looked at the shifter and what i had to work with.

then i saw TORCHES buwahahaha

i placed the shifter into the vice and heated that sum bitch till it bent at a 90 degree angle, then about 3 inches back i did it again at about a 75 degree angle.

put the shifter in and voila!!! YAYYYYY it works perfectly=))

thanks for all the suggestions just the same. i think what i needed was a minute to think instead of going insane LOL

but now its working beautifully=))

i  my Z again
