Posted April 19, 201113 yr comment_353347 Hey guys, I replaced Input, Output, and front cover seals today. Planning on putting into car tomarrow, can't wait to be able to shift into 5th. Swapped Automatic to 4 speed 3-4 years ago, unable to find a 5 speed at that time. It feels like I just did this, shouldn't take too long. April 19, 201113 yr comment_353353 I think you will like the 5-speed. What gears are in the diffy? I have a L28/5-speed out of a '82 ZX in my '73 with a 3.90 R200 truck diffy. Makes for fun spirited driving, but also good for long stretches of straight open highway. April 20, 201113 yr Author comment_353411 Hey Kenny, As of right now I have a 3.54 original diff. in it. Just cracked open the extra diff. yesterday to check the numbers stamped in the gear. Luckily it's a 3.90, I was hoping it wasn't the same as I had in it. I will start getting it ready to go in after I get the 5 speed in today. Is there anything I need to know when putting the 3.90 in? Do I need to find any other parts, or does it just swap directly over with my 3.54? Thanx for any info.Bryce Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/39302-4-speed-to-5-speed-swap/#findComment-353411 Share on other sites
April 20, 201113 yr comment_353414 Hi Bryce, if it is a 3.90 R180 from a Nissan 4X4 truck it is an easy swap. Simply unbolt the flanges from both diffys, then install the 3.54 flanges onto the 3.90 diffy. The attached photo shows the difference between the flanges, the one to use is on the right in the photo. If the 3.90 is an R200 you will need a mustache bar from a 280Z. Search the site and you should find some info on installing a R200. April 20, 201113 yr Author comment_353415 Ok, thanx for your help. It's out of a 280zx, so I have some mustache bar hunting to do. Bryce Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/39302-4-speed-to-5-speed-swap/#findComment-353415 Share on other sites
April 20, 201113 yr comment_353430 Bryce, For the speedometer to be correct, you'll also need the speedometer pinion gear. They are different colors depending upon which diff you have. I think I got mine at zspecialties. This has nothing to do with the function of the tranny, just the accuracy of the speedo. I have the z performace mods website saved in my bookmarks, but didn't know where to go about finding the White 19 tooth gear. April 22, 201113 yr comment_353634 Oh nice! I'm getting ready to swap a 5sp into my 260z. It'll be a nice change from the auto 3 spd. You should post a video! April 23, 201113 yr comment_353715 Maybe a short 36 mile cruise west on Kellogg would help you get used to it. I could get mine out of winter storage then we could let the 'twins' run, & a photo shoot.Bonzi Lon Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/39302-4-speed-to-5-speed-swap/#findComment-353715 Share on other sites
