Posted May 8, 201113 yr comment_355091 I've been working on a Pertronix install for a while on a 1972 that had a OEM ignition and need help. The car ran before the install but not after. Cannot get a spark out of the Flame-Thrower coil. I know this specifically, because I broke down and attached a long spark plug wire to the coil - held on - and cranked the engine. Nothing, not even a tickle. I was thinking I had the coil wired wrong, so I rearranged the wires to the coil a number of different ways each time turning over the engine. I really wish one combination would have been a shocking experience. Literally!I will be honest, I did have the coil wired wrong. I had the Pertonix Red wire on the Neg., and Black on Pos. If I've fried the module, I'll get to that in a bit. I just want spark out of the coil for now.I've been following this case, Pertronix Ignitor 1761 install and coil evaluation, from Akorns. I even thought the Flame-Thrower was bad and purchased a MSD 2 coil with the same results. Now, i do have lights: head lights and dome. Fan works, heater and Aux fan. Engine cranks over and over and over. But no spark. I did notice a little bit ago the Tach doesn't move with cranking of the engine as it did previously. Is there a fuse for the tachometer? I have just noticed a bad fuseable link with the starter. It literally came apart in my hand after installing a new battery and battery cables.Any thoughts or advise? Thank you very much,Sean Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/39505-spark-before-pertronix-and-coil-but-not-after-help/ Share on other sites
May 8, 201113 yr comment_355093 Did you fix the fusible link that went bad. I'm not a big fan of the Pertronix setup, but they do work. First thing I hope you kept the original parts. When modifying something and it does not work, try putting everything back and see if it works. Sometimes you get something crossed or in the wrong order. If it works after you do this then you either hooked it up wrong or the part is bad. Please try it and give us the results Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/39505-spark-before-pertronix-and-coil-but-not-after-help/#findComment-355093 Share on other sites
May 8, 201113 yr Author comment_355166 Yeah, I redid all the OEM ignition and still couldn't get a spark out of the coil. Not to concerned about after the coil.I can't get a spark out of the coil. May 8, 201113 yr comment_355167 Have you confirmed that you have power at the coil + with a test light or voltmeter? If you have power, you can try tapping a wire from the negative side of the coil to ground which should give a spark if the coil is good. May 8, 201113 yr comment_355178 Do you have a wiring diagram? Is it correctly wired? Do you have power to the coil when the ignition is on? Step by Step? Have you checked the points and condenser? I know this all sounds simple but it should be simple. I will get out my shop manuals and check for notes etc..
