December 18, 200222 yr comment_21103 The R200 is a stronger rear end than the R180.R200's came stock in later model Z's. I'm not surewhat year they started getting them but I am sureit came stock in '78. I think the differance is thering gear diameter is larger on the R200 - makingit stronger.*** If anyone has differant info then please correct me. ***- Jeff Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/3953-difference-in-rear-ends/#findComment-21103 Share on other sites
December 18, 200222 yr comment_21127 180mm vs 200mm ring gear2-pinion vs 4-pinionReasonably tough vs nearly unbreakable. The R200 was introduced with the 260Z (1974). It was used (in the same housing) through to 1989 in various ratios & LSD types. In the US the 300 Turbo's had an clutch-type LSD & the SE Turbo had a viscous LSD. You want the former (clutch type) + mounting hardware from a donor 260/280Z to suit. You should find plenty of info on fitting an R200 via the search feature on this site, zdriver.com, hybridz.org & zhome.com. December 18, 200222 yr comment_21130 You say that the R-200 started in 74 with the 260Z. Are you sure it was all 260Z's. ? I have heard they came out later than 74 but I really don't know. I have a 74 260Z and I haven't been able to tell yet what it is. How could I check while it's still in the car? I will be pulling it out for overhaul in a month or two but I would like to start lining up new parts some time soon. December 18, 200222 yr comment_21131 Britt, Ben is talking about the Australian market, which got the 260 from 74-78, they never got the 280 starting in 75 like we did.If I remember right, the 260's, even the FI 260's in the US had the R-180. The first year for the R-200 was in the 75 280Z. But, the 280 also got the R-180 in 77-78, so the 280's had either/or, not just one rear diff during its model run, it depends on the year and model. December 19, 200222 yr comment_21183 The 'accepted' diff installation was 260Z manual coupes had the R200 along with all 2+2's. But I've seen auto's with & manuals without, so who knows.Brit,The R180 uses alloy side plates for the output shafts, it is also noticeably taller than it is wide. Have a bit of a search & you should find photos' of each. December 20, 200222 yr comment_21258 I could probally reach up there with a magnet and see if it sticks to the side cover. That would tell me if it's a R-180 or R-200. March 11, 200520 yr comment_116107 I have looked at many sites and links, on the differences in the r 180 and the r200. I am going to put an r200 in my 72 240z, the local junk yard has some 280's but the rearends are all still in them. is there an easy way to tell if it is a r200 while it is still in car? And whats the magnet trick? Thanks Again guys.. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/3953-difference-in-rear-ends/#findComment-116107 Share on other sites
