72 240z vin decoding??

Recommended Posts

It's not like there were a lot of options for the North American market.

Don't take this the wrong way, but you're on a fishing trip. Tell us what you're trying to catch, and we can tell you if it's worth the effort or where to find the fish. In other words, your question is a little on the vague side. Are you trying to find info to have a period correct restoration or what?

I thought the only option given was when they called you to go pick up your car at the dealer, and you drove there eager to pick up the vehicle you'd been on a waiting list for that had finally arrived and you were then given the option of:

---

Take it or leave it, the next guy on the list is waiting.

---

Highlight between the dashes to see the answer.

Your VIN will tell you pretty much the sequence of manufacture, nothing else. 'Bout like your older Mopars do.

they at least sya they were built at this factory, this year, blah body sstyle and what not...

but as far as a fishing trip i would like to do a correct resto except with upgraded suspension...

just looking to make a daily out of it but hit the curves on the weekend!

thanks guys

You should have a VIN tag on your drivers door that will tell you approximately when the car was manufactured. What you cannot tell from any of the VIN tags is if your car was an HLS30U, UV, or UN. Assuming it is a manual transmission it would not be a UA, or a UAN. But these designations are of minor consequence. For the 1972 model year, the H in your VIN # signifies an L-24 engine type, the L signifies left-hand-drive and the S30 is the chassis type and they were all built in the same Japanese factory. Datsun USA did not import any factory options, however by 1972, USA options were available through Datsun dealers and they were dealer installed and American manufactured. AMCO Manufacturing Corporation supplied the options. I see your paint code number has rubbed off and you can match your orginal color to this reference: http://zhome.com/History/ZColorGallary/index.html
