My drivers seat rocks back and forth and I can't imagine Nissan meant for this to happen.

The bottom piece of metal with teeth moves up and down but only when the seat is in a normal driving position. When I lay the seat back (undrivable) it doesn't rock. See photo for the piece of metal I'm refering to (sorry but it's a bit blury).

Is there an easy fix short of buying the whole set for the reclining mechanism?

Ozzy, does the whole seat rock or just the seat back. If it is the whole seat you will find the attachments under the slider rail front or back may have loose nuts. when you look at these four bolt threads you should see directly below the slider rail a single plastic spacer on each position or maybe even more than one if the last owner was shorter than average this is where the nuts are that may need tightening. If it is the seat back only moving check the mechanism attachment screws for tension and movement tighten as required. If it is the actual mechnism lock and ratchet tongue you may be able to shim it out a bit. I have never attempted this shimming thow.

Also check the mounting bolts that mount the seat back to the hinge of the reclining mechanism. If it isn't the seat bottom mounting it could be these are a bit loose also....

Steve, it's just the seat back. I haven't had time to check anything out but will do so this weekend.

btw, do these Z's have hazzards?

The Hazard that my Z has is the loose nut behind the wheel!!

Well, someone told me I was supposed to have Hazzard lights at some point in time, however when I went to Beauliea just last week there was a Volvo display which said that they invented Hazzard lights in 1972... so that would explain why mine doesn't, and yours too (if its a pre-1972 model at least)

Any more thoughts on this?

I'm not so sure about Volvo's claim to have "invented" Hazard lights in 1972. The 1971 240Z that I previously owned (US Spec) had the toggle type of Hazard light switch (rather than the push/pull switch found on 1973 240Z's). Of course Datsun may have been so forward thinking back then that they actually stole it from Volvo before Volvo invented it! :stupid:

I had a 1970 Chevrolet Nova that had them. It was a knob on the steering column you would pull out / push in.

If I recall correctly, a friend's 68 Impala also had them.

Are you sure about the year? or the name?

My 74 doesn't have hazards but my 77 does so I would assume they were introduced somewhere in between.

My '68 Mustang had them, and I believe my dad's '68 Buick Riviera had them also.

We are talking about two completely different countries here. US has had them for as long as I can remember, but Australia might have had different laws concerning Hazard lights....

I understand that we are conversing with people of different countries. However, I believe that we were refuting the claim that "Volvo INVENTED Hazzard lights in 1972 ". Now they may have introduced them in some country or other in 1972, but they certainly didn't INVENT them in 1972.

Mmm... perhaps they worded it in another way. Perhaps they were the first to offer it as standard on a car? Or perhaps they meant they were the first to offer it as standard on all of their models?
