Posted July 10, 201113 yr comment_361139 Hi everyone, so I'm considering buying a new fuel filler cap because the one on my car right now does not lock into place (it merely sits on top of hole) and when the gas tank is relatively full, or full, and I take a hard turn fast, gas will leak out and spill slightly. Moreover, people can easily syphon my gas out. I have attached pictures to show what my current cap looks like. I don't believe it's a complete piece, as I don't have the locking key which there is a slot for, nor does the bottom of the cap (as pictured) have any tabs or arms to lock it into the plate in the body. My question then is, what type of gas cap can I buy that would lock into place? I see different types for sale online (some of which look like the one I already have), but I wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this themselves and found one that fits right. Thank you! July 10, 201113 yr comment_361141 You have the wrong cap. Not sure if new locking caps are available. MSA has OEM type caps listed. The early type is $60.00!!?? Ouch. July 10, 201113 yr comment_361147 MSA specifically says on their website that the 70-78 locking caps aren't available. This thread describes an alternative, though I don't know how difficult to find. Since it looks like reddat has one listed on eBay, they might be available elsewhere. He does put quite a premium on his parts.Yeah, I was right. It is available cheaper. July 11, 201113 yr comment_361188 All right - I do see a locking gas filler lid - I have not ever done any research on a locking lid - 78820 E8200 - looks like you would need the lock - clip - lid.Section 85-2 up to July '73 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/40157-replacing-gas-cap/#findComment-361188 Share on other sites
July 13, 201113 yr comment_361375 colbydc5, what are you going to do with the fuel tank drain bolt? It is so much easier to just undo it and drain gas vs. siphoning it through the fuel filler cap :-) Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/40157-replacing-gas-cap/#findComment-361375 Share on other sites
July 18, 201113 yr Author comment_361801 This is a great point. Nobody has ever siphoned from me anyway, it was just a though that had come by. Anyhow I think I'll just order an OEM cap. Thanks everyone for the info! Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/40157-replacing-gas-cap/#findComment-361801 Share on other sites
July 18, 201113 yr comment_361820 Sometimes it's not what comes out, but what goes in. I'm reminded of a friend's little boy who came into the kitchen and said, "Mommy, I filled your gas tank for you." Sure enough, he had filled it very carefully with sand. And then there are big people who can put things in your tank. It doesn't happen but once in a very blue moon to some unlucky person, but it does happen.Oddly, I doubt someone would drain off your tank with the bolt on the bottom. The universal tool of choice is still a rubber hose. Maybe that will change, but I never heard of anyone draining from the bottom back in the 70's when people were having their gas stolen. Generally speaking, thieves are incredibly stupid. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/40157-replacing-gas-cap/#findComment-361820 Share on other sites
