Change Fuel Filters

1978 280z acquired 3 months ago; on my list of to-do's is change the fuel filters. First time doing on my own. How do I relieve fuel and pressure that is already in the lines, etc. Don't want to disconnect something and have fuel all over the place.

Suggestions? Things to watch out for?

I have been sprayed in the face not fun! Try this: locate the cold start injector and use a 9 volt battery to activate it. This should relieve the fuel pressure. BUT when you remove the fuel line from the top of the filter remember to do this slowly just to make certain you have relieved the pressure. Also you may need new hoses and hose clamps make sure both are rated for fuel injection systems, I am not sure why part stores often do not carry the hose and the connectors are even harder to locate, they should be common seeing that most cars these day are fuel injected.

Unfortunately, cant get the car started...cranks but won't engage. I'm thinking may not be getting fuel...filter clogged at this point? Guess the 9-volt way to go and be ready to catch whatever drains when pull line from filter?

This happened to me the other night, not from changing filters but from doing donuts and having very little gas in the tank...i ran my lines dry :|

Did you just replace the engine bay fuel filter? If so just get a friend and starter fluid.. have him mist it into the intake for about 10 seconds after you get the car to start on the fluid. It will get the gas to flow up into the filter and run again.

Easiest way: Undo the clamp on the fuel filter. Wrap a paper towel around the end of the hose, and wiggle it off. There will be a small shot of fuel that soaks the paper towel, but it won't end up in your face. Obviously use this method at your own risk, because I'm an idiot (non-expert) and am unqualified to give you this advice. ;)
