Posted December 26, 200222 yr comment_21607 Help im stuck had replace the head gasket on my 73 240 apon doing so snaped to head bolts off there still stuck in the block tryed drilling only to find that the bits just dull is there a certan type i should be using other than metal? the other bolt that is in the block i had drilled i broke the screw out in the bolt so im kind of stuck i need some help with this problem please want mry Z back in the worst of ways thank you for your replys. December 27, 200222 yr comment_21608 The last time I had the same problem I just had to use a small drill and drill around the broken "eazy out" . They are as hard as your drills maybe harder and if you cant loosen it and back it out, I dont know of another option, do use P B BLASTER on the bolt and let them soak a while first. December 27, 200222 yr comment_21609 You could also try a left hand drill bit. While it is cutting it is also trying to loosen the broken bolt. Like Beandip said, use plenty of penetrating liquid and with either a good quality EZ-out or a left hand drill bit, you should have a little better luck. If not, you could always take the block to a machine shop and have them drill it out and install a Heli-coil in the block. The reason for taking it to a machine shop is simple, they can put it in a large drill press and make sure the hole is straight as you don't want the bit to "walk" off course and drill into the water jacket and ruin the block. A Heli-coil will be as strong if not perhaps even stronger than the original threads. If you are not having any luck getting the broken bolts out, spend a little and take it to the shop, it will save you time and a lot of aggravation if you can't get the bolts out correctly. December 27, 200222 yr comment_21673 The reason your bits are getting dull is because you are using bits for soft steel (aluminium, tin etc.) When you purchase new bits go to a small hardware store ask the clerk for a bit that will cut hardened steel. They are more expensive but they won't dull. And like 2many said use a high quality easy-out. The cheap one's break. Good luck.
