Nissan doesn't want to look back????

"It was really about the fact we had to be visionary and not retro, not looking back," said Diane Allen, head of California-based Nissan Design America and in charge of the 350Z's styling.

"We wanted to celebrate our future, not our past. The more we looked at it, we needed more of a modern, visionary statement."

"not our past" "modern, visionary"........ someone please tell me this woman does not have her job anymore. At a time when everyone is going retro, you go retro. As much as I hate VW, they proved we want retro and everyone else is following suit..... except Nissan.

I'll keep my sexist views to myself on this subject but I sure as hell hope someone fires this lady. If anyone has her email address, feel free to let her know what I think.

On another aspect, it is a great article that explains a lot...... it also explainst that this Diane woman needs to go back to Betty Crocker.

Interesting that a "modern, visionary statement that celebrates our future" ends up looking so much like an uninteresting copy of the designs of other carmakers. i.e. Audi TT, etc :angry:

To bad they didn't decide to break new ground and come up with something more original, like the Solstice, or at least something that set the car apart from the competition.

While the 240Z took design elements from other cars, the "complete package" set the car far apart from the competition. IMHO THAT was a "visionary statement" that served Nissan very well. Guess they have to learn that lesson all over again.:disappoin

Yes, I know where you're coming from.

Down here, Australias own, General Motors Holden, decided to reintroduce the Holden Monaro, which would have to be the most popular locally designed and built car in our motoring history.

Of course, the only similarity between the "OLD" and the "NEW" is the name.

I understand that the Holden Monaro is being sold in the USA as a Pontiac GT.

I reckon that had "they" designed the car to closely resemble the early Monaro, not only the younger generation would be interested but also the older rev heads (like me) who owned a Monaro would have bought one.

I guess visionary means something totally different to those of us who are in no need of a "cranial-rectal inversion".

She probably wasn't even born when the 240 came out, so what would she know about the past except for what she may have read? While I was reading her comments all I could envision was a "valley-girl"(like you see in those low-budget movies) suffering from "post-puberty stress disorder"!

I read that article and got more than a few chuckles.......LOL

Perhaps if Nissan had designed it in Japan the car would have looked a lot better!

I agree, If they stayed with the original intent of the first generation z's of having a very affordable car that could keep up with the expensive European cars they would have been more successful. The only thing cheap about the 350 is the construction and attention to detail. When in comes to originality, they fell very short, although the original generation z's look very similar in styling to the '67-'68 Toyota 2000 GT.

:cry: It is truly too bad they made it look like a VW Bugg that has been chopped and channeled. They could have looked at the Jag roadster the Honda 2000 they have the style. the 350z will sell because it performs ,and because of the price point. Like the saying in the Real Estate field " there is a pot for every butt " . The car will sell but will it remain viable in the next few yrs. we will see. With the PT cruser , Fords Thunder Bird , and other visionaries out there viaing for the $$ it remains to be seen . The muscle car is comming back with a number of manufacturing cos. reintroducing rear wheel drive hi-power offerings. I think that it will rise hell with the Z market. I just hope my '73 will last a long , long, time . my 2cnts:ermm:
