Please don't misunderstand me, but I don't think your thermostat is impacted by tropical weather.  It doesn't know if it's at sea level, on a snowy mountain top, in a desert, or in the middle of a tropical rain forest.  It only knows what temperature it's supposed to open at as the radiator coolant heats up.  Thermostats come in various temperature range ratings.  As was suggested, go to your local Nissan dealer and get a new thermostat.  Don't ask for a tropical one or an arctic one.  They will have the one that will work just dandy in your car.  You could also go to your local Ford dealer as they also have one that fits the Z.  

Is there another mechanic in your area who can work on your Z?  Your current mechanic made some real career limiting statements and should be avoided in the future.  Assuming there are no other mechanics who will work on your Z, you have two choices.  You can work on it yourself with guidance from members of this forum, or you can sell the car and get something a little more mainstream for Panama, like a Miata or a BMW.

Are you the only Z owner in Panama?  Find another owner or a local Nissan/Datsun Club to join.  You'll get good advice on local repair specialists.  With all the problems you've had with this car, I'm surprised you still own it.  There comes a time to either get it fixed properly or move on to a better car.  The car should provide pleasure, not constant headaches.  So, unless you get pleasure from headaches, you may want to consider a more reliable, less maintenance intensive, car.

You still haven't reworked the fuel lines!

One thing at a time! So you added coolant and the car no longer overheats? You will need to check it again later...

It sounds like the car runs better...correct? It still slows down but doesn't shut off...

The fuel lines are the next thing to replace! but don't take it back to your Colombian mechanic. He's an idiot!!!!

You can do it witth a little guidance from these guys here. It's easy work. Try doing it yourself!!

The bubbles are not an issue for now. Don't get distracted!

The valves are not the issue. Your friends advise is suspect...

Actually Nissan started labeling their temperature ranges in the FSM in 1974.  Here's a copy from 1976, it's clearer.  And don't forget that jalex is in Panama.  There's probably not a Nissan dealer ever 30 miles like there is in the States.  

It looks like there has been some progress though.  It doesn't die now.

 

If he can't locate a 170 d thermostat locally, someone here might send him one. I even might...

Run your carbs up to 1,000 rpm.  A lot easier to drive and more oil flowing plus you have A/C, right?

After removing the Heat Control thermostat which i really dont know if it was shut or not  and hard line from the circuit, i am still experiencing sudden rpm drop from 900 to 500. Is there any posible way of keeping the rpm stable at 900? My car has a Schneider 274F camshaft and not the original one. Could this be the reason?? The car is not stalling but this sudden rpm fluctuation feels unconfortable when driving and getting stuck in traffic jams.

 Need a few more puzzle pieces. When the idle drops to 500, and assuming you instinctively hit the throttle to compensate, is there any stumble or hesitation? Also assuming that you revved the engine to compensate and let it fall back to an idle, did the idle return to 900, even temporarily or did the idle go back to 500?

the idle goes back to 900 rpm and stays there! I will check again today!

You can test your thermostat by putting it in a pan of water along with a cooking thermometer and heating it to see if it opens at the proper temperature.

As for Datsuns in Panama, I'm surprised there weren't a few Zs brought in by US military members stationed there or Americans working for the Canal company during the 1970s.  It's been a few years since I was there but plan to visit again in April.  Interesting that the local Nissan dealer won't supply parts for a Datsun.  My local deal never sold Datsuns, but is happy to provide parts for my Z if they are still available in the supply system.

Nissan Thermostat probably won't make much difference, but I've read that they're more reliable. If you put one side by side with a Stant it's easy too see the difference; they are made to a higher standard of quality. I got one a couple of years ago at Nissan parts counter in Tucson. They had the various heat ranges.
