Posted July 28, 201113 yr comment_362617 The driver side scuff plate on my 75 280Z(manufact. 7/75) is toast. I've been told that the plates sold by BD and Courtesy for 240Z will fit, and also been told that they won't fit. All the pics I've seen for the 280 show a straight plate, but mine has an arc cut at the back to fit the wheel well. Anybody got an answer? July 28, 201113 yr comment_362689 I had the same problem. The ones from BD are for the 240/260. They probably would fit but not look quite right. I lucked out at the junk yard and found a pair in good shape. How bad is the rust? can you grind off all the rust and recover them? July 30, 201113 yr Author comment_362792 grantf, nope the rust has eaten completely thru in an area about 2" square, bubbled the vinyl cover off. I don't have the skill or tools to fab a new piece, so I guess I'll keep looking. August 2, 201113 yr comment_363044 If you can locate a pair that are in decent shape (I may have some), I have found that you can use spray paint stripper and the original vinyl covering will pop off within minutes. I sanded the rust, treated with Naval Jelly and then finished them with Truck Bed Liner spray. Three good coats and a couple of days dry-time to get them nice and hard - they look fantastic!. August 8, 201113 yr Author comment_363594 Zcurves, I've tried to find some on-line with no luck and the bone yards around here don't have any. If you want to part with a set, PM me and we 'll see if we work out something. If they are intact with no holes blown thru I can fix the rust and the covers. August 8, 201113 yr comment_363596 I''l may also have a pair of them somewhere in the garage from a severely rusted Z that I parted out a couple of years ago. I seem to remember that the scuff plates were good on it. January 24, 201213 yr comment_378617 Hope this isn't too old of a thread to post some info...I had rusted scuff plates too, with the vinyl peeling off - so i decided to save / refurbish them instead of just buying new ones.I used a heat gun to take off the old vinyl. Trick is to find that temp that's not too hot that it melts the vinyl, but enough to soften the old glue. And it works like a charm. (helps to have another person help out on this)Sanded them down, sprayed with primer rust inhibitor, and nstead of re-wrapping the scuff plates in vinyl, i sprayed it with truck bed liner for a rugged look.I posted a video on my blog if it helps: http://dailydatsun.com/2011/11/27/scuff-and-rubber/Edit: haha don't know how i missed it, but just like ZCurves said! February 16, 201213 yr comment_380926 Plasti Dip offers a rattle can, available in clear. Of course, if the finish of the scuff plate needs to be covered over (by a bed liner coating) vinyl spray may not be what you need.
