Posted July 31, 201113 yr comment_362882 Hi everyone,I just took out my transmission and re-installed another one.But since doing so, I've fogotten where the wires go!I want to be extra safe so as to not short anything out.Can anyone identify which wires go to the starter, and which go to the transmission?Pictures will help big time!I am assuming the negative battery cable hooks directly to the starter...but the remainder I'm not so sure!EDIT: this is on an early build 240z Edited July 31, 201113 yr by boro92 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/40359-what-wires-go-to-the-starter-and-which-wires-go-to-the-tranny/ Share on other sites

July 31, 201113 yr comment_362887 Note:The starter is grounded to the transmission and a large black wire connects the battery -neg terminal to the starter bolt at the transmission.A yellow wire from the starting circuit connects to the solenoid on top of the starter.A black wire from the battery +pos terminal connects to the contactor screw terminal on top of the starter. It would be wise to change this to a red cable (you can get them at the battery section of any auto parts store).A small fusible link wire is also connected to the +pos starter terminal.A ground wire from the -neg battery post also goes to the firewall near the battery. There should be a bolt on the firewall. August 1, 201113 yr Author comment_362983 Can anyone confirm that I've actually got the right wiring? I just connected my battery terminals and I had to disconnect within a second due to the smoke! a ground cable got hot enough that the insulation melted off. Quite alarming. August 1, 201113 yr Author comment_362992 EDIT - nevermind. Too much crazy. Reversed the + and - cables (despite labelling them correctly in the image!)all is well! August 2, 201113 yr comment_363027 As Blue said, 'get the RED cable'. I made the same mistake just because both were black, smoked the fuzeable link. Got the RED one, no more confusion.Bonzi Lon Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/40359-what-wires-go-to-the-starter-and-which-wires-go-to-the-tranny/#findComment-363027 Share on other sites
