September 19, 201113 yr Author comment_366894 My solution to the pads on the top of the tank hit me by surprise last night as I was straightening things in the garage. Behold my Genius... They are a hard rubberish material, I do not think they hold water, very tough yet giving. I will check to see if they hold any water and if not, they offer a perfect hard rubber to compress against. September 23, 201113 yr Author comment_367203 here is a pic from my phone of the gas tank. The inside is completely YELLOW with the coating. I have to check to make sure it is not obstructed or blocked, but I am relatively sure it will be fine. now I have to decide how to protect the outside of the tank. I will Either POR it, or just prime and paint it. But as you can see, there is old factory paint on the tank. Do I have to remove that before I POR it? September 23, 201113 yr comment_367217 POR adheres BEST to etched bare metal. That would mean, yes, remove all the paint, degrease it and then etch it with their Metal Prep product before you POR it.Alternatively, you could just scuff/sand the tank as is and top-coat it with another protective type paint. The big advantage to POR is it's strength and durability, but it will eventually haze due to UV light. (Top coat it with some Chassis Black and it will remain glossy / satin forever.) With a different paint, you would give up some of the durability, but gain the long-term shine/ satin finish.FWIWE Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/40670-strong-fuel-smell-in-the-car-when-i-turn-left/?&page=5#findComment-367217 Share on other sites
September 23, 201113 yr comment_367221 Airplane remover will strip the paint pretty well. If yours is like mine, there will be a lot of surface rust. Dilute muriatic acid can remove that, followed by phosphoric acid (Ospho), that will neutralize any flash rust and give you a paintable surface. I just used an epoxy primer and topcoat (appliance epoxy), but POR15 is probably better.
