AndysPlit Posted September 12, 2011 Share #1 Posted September 12, 2011 I'm aware that the order of the wires on the distributor is (counter clockwise) 1,5,3,6,2,4. However, when connecting those wires to the spark plugs does #1 start at the front of the engine? I'm sure it does, but do I follow the sequence 2,3,4,5,6 consecutively in that order when connecting the wires with the plugs? Or is the sequence not so straight forward on the cylinders? My engine is misfiring after I disconnected the the wires to replace my valve cover gasket. Thanks!
LeonV Posted September 12, 2011 Share #2 Posted September 12, 2011 (edited) It is straightforward: 1-2-3-4-5-6 from front of the engine, 1-5-3-6-2-4 counter-clockwise on distributor.I had a similar issue after adjusting my valves. Check your plug wires at the plugs (and distributor), they may be loose. I had to slightly crimp one of my plug wire ends so that it would "click" into the plug again. Also, be sure to check the coil-distributor wire. Also make sure that your distributor cap is seated correctly. AndysPlit Posted September 13, 2011 Author Share #4 Posted September 13, 2011 I got the car to stop misfiring. I think I simply need new spark plug wires.
LeonV Posted September 13, 2011 Share #5 Posted September 13, 2011 If you look under the hood when it's dark, do you see arcing between plug wires that are close together? Some ignition system checking and maintenance will be necessary to determine the cause, not guessing.
Gary in NJ Posted September 13, 2011 Share #6 Posted September 13, 2011 If you look under the hood when it's dark, do you see arcing between plug wires that are close together? That has been my method for 30 years.
olzed Posted September 13, 2011 Share #7 Posted September 13, 2011 I remember from my youth, a friend sprayed the entire engine including all the electrics with silver paint. Quite a pretty sight on a dark night with the engine running. Sorry for a bit of hijack.
