EGR in '73?

I find myself having to go through a 1 time smog check with my '73. I talked to the tech while having my 911 smogged and he said it might pass with the triple Webers as long as the expected smog equipment was in place. I know the '73 didn't have an air pump, did it have an EGR?

I forgot to grab my factory service manual while I was in Sacramento today... That would have told me.

Rob, 1973 had both an air pump and an EGR Valve. The EGR on the 73 is bigger than on the earlier models. I checked my manuals and they clearly show both in the diagrams and in the text copy. BUT, I have a question for you. Why do you have to have your car smog checked. It's clearly old enough that in California that it is Smog exempt. Is this something local, because it'snot a State requirement that I'm aware of.

As mentioned previously, if it's a 73, it's supposed to have both an air pump and an EGR system.

So why am I in this thread then? Because reading through the service manuals, it appears that 73 and 74 is identical. So if you're looking for EGR parts, you can probably use 73 or 74 parts.

Also, I think everything from 70 to 74 had air pumps, and I believe they are all the same. So if you're looking for an air pump, I don't think it matters what year.

So does this stuff have to work, or just be present and look like it's connected properly?

According to the tech, it just has to be present. The problem is my '73 has triple Webers. Presently, I am looking for warehouse space in Carson City or Story County to store cars, tools, trailer etc... I can use the address to register the Z and my 914. The 914 might pass, the Z not so much.

I have a 73 and never had to get a smog check. Here's a quote from that site:

"Vehicles with two-cycle engines, engines under 50 cubic inch displacement and vehicles powered by electricity are exempt. All 1973 and older model year vehicles are not required to get a smog inspection under any circumstances "

Oh terrific! I live in Nevada now. Smog test one time for all '68 and newer...

So now you know...

There are circumstances that require a smog inspection at a referee station. If you get stopped by a police officer and he feels your vehicle is not in compliance an inspection is necessary. If you get caught in a roadside check and fail, off to the smog dogs. If someone turns your license plate into 1-800-CUTSMOG off to a test / inspection with you.

No exemption from compliance just biennial inspections. I know a sheriff who gets a kick out of writing emissions fix it tickets and knows what each vehicle is required to have from 1968 forward.

Thankfully the state is broke and hopefully are busy with more pressing police matters...But this can generate revenue so ???
