Posted September 15, 201113 yr comment_366539 am I crazy to undertake it on my own with just jack stands and a floor jack? The front seal is leaking and I'm tempted to try it. I know removal is much easier than getting everything lined up for putting it back and not sure if getting it all lined up and held in place can be a one person job.Trevorhttp://240z.me Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/40791-one-man-job-removing-and-replacing-transmission/ Share on other sites
September 15, 201113 yr comment_366542 That's how I've always done it. Just me is generally fine. I put the front on either jackstands or ramps, and the rear on jackstands so that the wheels are free to turn. September 15, 201113 yr comment_366543 Make sure that your floor jack doesn't leak. It's a great irritation to have the elevation of the transmission slowly changing while you're trying to get things lined up. And make sure you get the car high enough to slide the transmission out before you start. It's possible to get it removed but stuck under the car, requiring more wasted time running around re-adjusting the jack stands. Plus, beware the trans tipping off the floor jack, unless you're going to bench press it out and in like some do. September 15, 201113 yr comment_366544 Don't forget to put a support under the rear of the motor so it doesn't "hang" on the motor mounts when you remove the transmission. September 15, 201113 yr comment_366547 I've always done tranmission by myself with a floor jack and jack stands. I bought a trans adapter years ago that goes in place of the saddle on my floor jack and not only holds the trans but allows me to tilt and turn it into any position. Didn't cost much but I bought it at least 20 years ago. Similar to the one attached but I use tie downs instead of chain: Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/40791-one-man-job-removing-and-replacing-transmission/#findComment-366547 Share on other sites

September 15, 201113 yr comment_366564 A good tranny jack is not a wasted purchase either. It can make other jobs VERY easy as well. Like say dropping a fuel tank! September 15, 201113 yr comment_366565 Bench-pressing a tranny while under the car is the only weight-training I do... Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/40791-one-man-job-removing-and-replacing-transmission/#findComment-366565 Share on other sites
September 15, 201113 yr comment_366566 I pulled and replaced the T56 in my GTO when I put my new clutch and remote slave bleeder in. I'll tell you what...you wouldn't be bench pressing that bad boy! Maybe a bit of an exaggeration but it seemed to weigh as much as two Z transes! September 15, 201113 yr Author comment_366570 on a side note, how crazy/stupid would it be to replace the seals on the transmission and not do anything with the clutch while I'm in there? The odometer has about 127,000 on it (no idea how accurate but seems close). I don't know if any clutch work was ever done and judging by the ball joints I'd say the prior owners weren't much for maintenance. The clutch works great now and I only put about 7 to 8,000 miles a year on the car so I figure if it even has another 20,000 or so miles left on it that will get me 3 years and put off spending $350+ on clutch parts and flywheel surfacing. Also hoping that maybe if I don't mess with it then things will be lined up better when putting it back together.Or just bite the bullet and order up a Nissan clutch for it while I've got it apart? September 15, 201113 yr comment_366573 The FSM makes a note of removing/breaking the carb linkage before lowering the transmission. Easy to overlook! All the steps in the FSM are straightfoward and easy to follow.Jim Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/40791-one-man-job-removing-and-replacing-transmission/#findComment-366573 Share on other sites
