Lovemy240z Posted September 28, 2011 Share #1 Posted September 28, 2011 Hey guys, I'm brand new here and have only had my z about two weeks! A few days ago I was stopping at a stop sign and the brakes felt weird. I barely stopped, but heard air coming out when I hit the brakes. I parked my car and realized the RPMs were going up as I pressed the brakes. I couldn't drive home because the car would barely stop. Any help would be very much appreciated! I'm new to cars, but I have some knowledge. Vacuum leak? HELP
Zed Head Posted September 28, 2011 Share #2 Posted September 28, 2011 Use search term "brake booster". All will become clear.
beermanpete Posted September 28, 2011 Share #3 Posted September 28, 2011 The power brake booster has failed. Datsun calls it the "Master-Vac". Rebuilt boosters are available at most auto part stores. Typically they come with a new or rebuilt master cylinder as well.

My '72 Master-Vac failed a few months after I bought the car, but the symptoms weren't as immediate and dramatic as Lovemy240Z describes, and I never lost braking ability, though pedal pressure rose to an uncomfortably high level. Though if I had to put money on it, it probably is the Master-Vac. Suckers are kinda pricey though, so check for leaks first.Chris
Lovemy240z Posted February 9, 2012 Author Share #5 Posted February 9, 2012 Sorry it took so long to reply, but Yes it was the brake booster. Only problem was the new brake booster was a tad bit bigger so I had to redrill holes in the fire wall. Thanks for the help guys, I'll definitely post more problems on here. Everyone seems very knowledgeable!
