phi22b@ck Posted January 3, 2003 Share #1 Posted January 3, 2003 Sorry if this is a cross post but it fits into several forums. Can anyone tell me what the cross-compatible struts are for my 280 when I shorten the struts?I have heard that the 86-91 MR2 rears will work as shortened front inserts, but would like to hear others' experience, plus what other options or any suggestions. This is for an ITS race car. Thanks!p
hmsports Posted January 4, 2003 Share #2 Posted January 4, 2003 All I've used on my shortened struts were Tokiko Illuminas (or whatever the model was). They get soft quick when racing ITS -- less than one season (or about 5 race weekends). I have been trying to get information from Koni about their inserts and if my struts need to be shortened or not. Can't quite get a straight answer. One thing is to make sure you have the struts you plan to use BEFORE you shorten the struts. You need them to get exact measurements of how much to cut out of the strut. phi22b@ck Posted January 4, 2003 Author Share #3 Posted January 4, 2003 Yeah -- I am hoping to go for something like a shortened KYB or Koni. I was looking for billstiens, but I need model compatibility first. I have also heard that the rabiit struts work, but I dont know -- there seem to be some issues with softening due to the weight, Rabbits weigh aa bit less than full dressed Z cars... Mudge Posted January 4, 2003 Share #4 Posted January 4, 2003 Go for Koni or Bilsteins, revalved or not, KYB I'd pass on JMO
phi22b@ck Posted January 20, 2003 Author Share #5 Posted January 20, 2003 I got a great deal on a pair of illuminas for the front (shortened) so thats where I'm headed on the fronts. Now I need reaers -- any big deal if I use a different kind? GR2s are relatively inexpensive and can be revalved after they soften right? Cant seem to find the billsteens... Oh well... maybe next time
phi22b@ck Posted January 20, 2003 Author Share #6 Posted January 20, 2003 What I was thinking was cutting the rear struts to use the GR2s that would normally be used in the fronts.
Mudge Posted January 20, 2003 Share #7 Posted January 20, 2003 300ZX or ZXT fronts work I *think*I would be wary of using struts from a light weight car, since you guys are going to be using heavy springs with them, without revalving them you'd just kill the struts. No sense in saving $50-$75 per pair and getting Tokico IMO. For the real deal though, find what works in a Koni strut and get them valved for thier purpose. Bilsteins can be revalved too if there are any out there that can be used, alot of shops that made them adjustable though are dead.
