Posted October 11, 201113 yr comment_368939 Hey so the threading on my shift knob was kaputt when I got the car and the PO had driven a screw threw the side to hold it on the shift rod. (don't know the proper terminology)Anyhow does anyone know what size threading the shift rod uses at top where the shift knob screws on (for a 77 280Z)?The knob itself is fine so I'm thinking I'll just screw an insert into the old hole with the correct thread and it'll be better then new. Thanks! October 11, 201113 yr comment_368947 I have a '77/ 4-speed manual. The shift rod is M8-1.5 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/41045-shift-knob-threading/#findComment-368947 Share on other sites
October 11, 201113 yr comment_368948 Also, use a thin M8 jam nut under the knob. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/41045-shift-knob-threading/#findComment-368948 Share on other sites
October 11, 201113 yr comment_368965 I have a bakelight round knob that needed attention thread wise. I over drilled the hole a bit, filled it with JB Weld drilled and tapped it and it hasn't let me down in 8 years of daily driving..... October 11, 201113 yr comment_368969 I'm reasonably sure the thread is 8 x 1.25 mm. Not many, if any 8 x 1.5 mm threads on a Z. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/41045-shift-knob-threading/#findComment-368969 Share on other sites
October 12, 201113 yr Author comment_369005 Well I'll grab a 1.25 and 1.5 and see which one fits. The Jb weld is also tempting maybe I'll use that in combination to make a rock solid knob.ZKars, your avatar is one awesome shot btw! Beautiful Z! October 13, 201113 yr comment_369104 I'm reasonably sure the thread is 8 x 1.25 mm. Not many, if any 8 x 1.5 mm threads on a Z.I stand corrected. It is in fact, M8x1.25. I need better glasses or bigger numbers on the tap and die set.
