Nikkie fuel pump rebuild...sort of

Hey guys...I "rebuilt" my Nikki fuel pump yesterday...maybe I cheated a little bit. I had the original Nikki pump from my '72 and realized why it was replaced...very weak springs in the lower part of the pump...the engine would not go past 3,500 rpm with that pump installed (the pump lever and diaphragm springs were weak and wouldn't pull enough fuel through the pump). I searched for an NOS rebuild kit for the pump, but came up empty. I then began looking on Ebay for a similar pump and found one for a 1962-68 4 cylinder. It had the same part number on the lower assembly as mine, the same pump lever, and the same size fuel bowl top. The only major difference was the position of the fuel inlet on the bowl. I disassembled both pumps, cleaned the crust out of the Z's fuel bowl with "Value Craft" carb cleaner (cheapest at Auto Zone...it worked great :), and put the fuel bowl and top onto the new lower assembly. It still looks old, but now has new guts...not bad for a $42 investment.

Sorry for dragging up old thread,  But....

I am working on getting my newly acquired, mostly original '72 running again after a 15 year slumber.  Replacing the entire fuel system (and brakes, coolant, etc) and decided to pick up a new fuel pump from Autozone (had them in stock).  I assumed the pump would be the cheap looking aftermarket pump with the one piece stamped metal cover assembly.  Low and behold a very proper looking 5 screw pump was in the box.  Cost was $34.  Looking over the pump, I could not find any manufacturer markings at all on the pump....just a few numbers inked on the top of the pump.

 

Looks right, hopefully it work right.  Just an FYI.
