5150 will Posted October 20, 2011 Share #1 Posted October 20, 2011 I took my head off tonight to do the HG and all was fine till I turned it over and found this in # 6......What do you guys think? Repairable?
5150 will Posted October 20, 2011 Author Share #2 Posted October 20, 2011 Sorry those pics didn't turn out very well. Basically the chamber looks like it's pitted vs. all the others that still have the machine finish (under the carbon of course). The sidewall near the exhaust valve has some fairly good pits. I tried to get them in the two pics. It looks like either detonation, or possibly corrosion.
madkaw Posted October 20, 2011 Share #3 Posted October 20, 2011 It's repairable, but it will have to be welded and machined. Time to do a rebuild on the head. Looks like you have an early e-88 which would be worth the effort. Or you can find another head in better shape.
5150 will Posted October 21, 2011 Author Share #4 Posted October 21, 2011 Thanks Steve. It's actually an E31. I'll take it somewhere to get looked at and see what the damages are gonna be.
madkaw Posted October 21, 2011 Share #5 Posted October 21, 2011 Oh its an e-31 head. Well I think you might have an issue that was problematic with the e-31 heads. You definetly need to have the head checked out, but might be worth the effort. Becareful though, you might catch that awful 'while i'm at it disease' and put bigger valves and unshroud, ect.............

5150 will Posted October 21, 2011 Author Share #7 Posted October 21, 2011 Blue, I did some searching and saw the pics you posted of yours. Mine doesn't look as severe, but I'm guessing it would be electrolysis. My car did sit for 23 years before I got it and I'm pretty sure there might have been some HG leaking going on before it was parked. It does/did run good though..... 5150 will Posted October 21, 2011 Author Share #8 Posted October 21, 2011 So, when I take this thing in, if the shop I go to checks it out and feels its repairable, what do you guys feel is "reasonable" price wise to have it refreshed? I'm not gonna go off the deep end or anything, just what should be done. I've had some suggestions on where to take it from a friend who's more of a motor guy than I am but I've never had to have any head work done and don't want to get $crewd in the process. Diseazd Posted October 21, 2011 Share #9 Posted October 21, 2011 I had an E31 with exactly the same problem in number 6. It was caused by electrolysis. A reputable shop can fix it for $50.00 to $75.00.
5150 will Posted October 21, 2011 Author Share #10 Posted October 21, 2011 Dropped my head off today at a reputable recommended shop and they are gonna check it out and work it over for me. He said he's seen and repaired much worse.
