Hi :) I'm new to the forums, just got my 260z a week ago. And I have to say I'm having quite the adventure with this car. I'm coming from an automatic 05 scion tC so this is my first classic/manual car.

My question is I've had some trouble these last few days with the choke. From what I understand its used to warm an engine from a cold start with a rich a/f mix. When I first got the car I would hardly have to apply it at all and it would start and idle fine. This morning I tried starting it with the choke barely on and it wouldn't fire up. It sparked after I pulled it all the way back, but after giving it a good 10 min to warm up and trying to wean it off it just would not idle comfortably on its own. I'm also noticing a prominent shaking that wasn't there before. Any suggestions? I was told to not drive around with the choke on so keep in mind by warm up I mean its just getting revved lightly in neutral in my parking spot.

The need for the choke is related to temperature. If it is getting colder where you live that may be the reason for needing to use the choke. 10 minutes is a long time to leave the choke on. Usually the choke can be turned off in a minute or two. Leaving the choke on too long ca n foul the spark plugs which cause rough running. Check the plugs, if they are black and sooty they shold be replaced.

@beer, I understand what a choke is. But replacing the plugs does nothing though if my mixture is too rich and just going to foul them again.

@buysell, it sat for a few weeks according to the guy I bought it from. He seemed a little "off" though. I wouldn't be surprised if it sat for much longer. I've decided to take apart and clean the carbs this weekend. Hopefully ill update soon after that
