do i need a higher octane fuel with this combo, or would it only be needed with n42 head about to buy parts need to know perth australia pistons new from 4cyn nissian pintara u.s.a. ? block L28 bore +30tho rings +60 tho my teck man in oz says it may ping or detonate without advanced timing and higher octane gas down under oz

dont know what pintara is, what is compression ratio of engine with pintara pistons and p90 head? i think that your teck (sic) man said that it would ping with advanced timing not without.

On my stroker, I get slight pinging if the ignition is advanced beyong stock timing of 5 BTDC. This is with NGK BP plugs.

Have read that using non-projected plugs *may* reduce pinging / allow more advanced timing in higher compression engines.

Here is a great utility for mixing and matching L6 bits...

I don't know anything about the pistons that you mention but if you keep the static compression as defined by the tool in the link above at or below 9.5ish then you should be fine with stock cam and ignition timing on 93+ octane fuel. If your static compression goes much above 10 on these engines then detonation becomes an issue without better gas or excessively retarded ignition.

Remember this is a US based forum.....they don't get what we have and visa versa

I'm running an L28 with VG30DETT flat top pistons (87.5mm vs 86mm stock L28 size) stock Nissan HG and an unshaved P90 head.

Does not ping at all with 20 degrees static on the dizzy with premium fuel and an "A" spec stock camshaft. I calculated the compression ratio to around 8.3, it isn't but will be turbo'ed.

Runs beautifully.
