My goal is to install the O-ring and seal internal to the speedo drive to stop a leak, but I am not sure how to remove the drive carrier/pinion from the transmission. I did remove the 10 mm bolt that holds down a little flat retainer. Does the whole thing unscrew from the transmission? There are no flats or a hex on the drive carrier so I wonder if I just grab it with channel-lock pliers?

Wrap the channel-locks with a rag, grip tight, and wiggle it out. They are stuck in there pretty good if it's never been out.If you have trans fluid in there it might be messy(I would drain the trans first making sure the fill plug will come out). Good luck.

Thanks a lot for the direction. That was not an easy job! A small amount of transmission fluid dripped out, maybe because the front end was elevated about 3". Getting the tiny pin out with destroying it was tricky, but it went back together just fine. The inner seal was very hard from heat and age, but it came out using a drill bit just a little larger than the internal diameter of the inner seal. Seems to be plenty of fluid left in the transmission because when I removed the fill plug it started running out a bit. I wiped down the leaky area and hope to road test it later today when the weather lifts. BTW, my 1970 Datsun roadster has the same setup and I have the O-ring and seal for it also.

I am a new member, and looking for a source for the small seal inside the speedometer driver on my 1973 240 Z. Please send a link for your favorite supplier. I will also be in the market for replacement carpet and seat when I finish stopping all of the oil leaks.

somebody has a picture how deep it needs to go, and how the retainer clip holds it down ? I just changed the o ring on mine, but now, the speedo doesn't work anymore and under driving I can feel vibration on the gearstick...

There is a slot cut in the body of the inserted cylinder. The 10mm bolt, tab, and this slot act as a retainer

Guys thanks for the fast input ! I just took it apart and saw my mistake, there's indeed a groove, where the clip goes in. Everything works fine again.
