Cutaway Engine

Please correct me: I had read that Nissan had licenses from Mercedes for the initial design process they used and from SU for the initial carbs.

Prince ( reportedly ) used some MB patents in the valvetrain of their G7 engine, but Nissan's L20 six was designed long before the forced merger between Prince and Nissan, and I have never seen any evidence that the MB patented details ( reportedly ) used by Prince were also used - or 'inherited' - by Nissan. I think the stories are rooted in perceived visual similarities and the gossip arising from that. I for one have never seen any hard evidence - have you?

As for licensing, that's everywhere. The S30 was no different to most other cars in using componentry that was licensed from the patent holders ( Girling, Dunlop, Borg Warner, Porsche etc etc ) and the Hitachi licensing of the SU carb design is one of these. But, so what? You can point to the Solex carb on the MB engine you pictured and say the same thing...

Neither of your posts has anything to do with making a cutaway running L6.

What I am after is some helpful input on modifying the L6 to run in a cutaway state. Not a history lesson on the Z.

Nor have the comments in posts 7 & 11, which mine were in reply to.

If you want to police your thread to the extent that any slightly O/T comments are banned then I wish you luck, and you're going to need it. Potatoes usually come out of the ground with a bit of mud too, but it doesn't mean you have to eat it....

Thanks for clarifying. Unfortunately I have a terrible memory for details but I did read references to Mercedes motor design and Nissan in the past 8 years. In fact it stirred me in to searching for a few pictures of Merc motors from the 60's and I noted many similarities. (such as the valve train and timing chain and general motor layout in the photo above..even the spring clips on the rockers). I will keep my eye out for more substantial references and report back when I come across them.

Some remarks are best ignored is that what you are saying.

Perhaps you are correct.:classic:

You're starting to get the idea. Well done.

And keep at it with the QUOTE function. You'll get the hang of it eventually.

Those comments came from posts pertaining to my subject.

Your comments did not.

Unlike posts 11 and 16 ( not to mention 17 and 18 ), eh? Keep it up and we might get Off Topic posts outnumbering On Topic......

Here's an On Topic suggestion for you: How about you make a cutaway engine out of LEGO? It'll be lighter, it comes in colours that make people smile and it'll be easier to get Public Liability insurance cover on it.

I would say for something like this it is best to get some bad l24 blocks / heads for free and give an attempt. I see them on craigslist from time to time so it wouldn't cost you anything but some time.

Have you attempted to contact that guy through youtube or something and asking for any tips / advice on your project? He might have some valuable information to get you started.

I have all the parts thanks busted240. I found another vid from the guy with the Model A running, and he goes into a lot more detail about greasing the moving parts etc, so should be some help.

Thanks Blue. Yes thats the vid.

  • 1 month later...

Update on this cutaway engine.

I was given an L28 all in bits by a friend. Block, head, crank, pistons and rods, and a box full of assorted parts, nuts and bolts.

Spent a week sorting and assembling. Had the wrong crank for a start(LD 28) Managed to exchange it for L28.

Cut windows in 4 and 6 cylinders, and 4 5 6 crancase. Fitted grease nipples to rear 4 mains and 4 5 6 conrods. Blocked oil holes in the block that feeds those mains. Cut the rear off the rocker cover. cut a section from the side of the head, so 4 5 6 valves can be seen moving, and the inlet and exhaust ports are sectioned. Cut the rear off the manifold. Retained a 240 Z inlet manifold and twin carbs, but just sucking off the front carb.

It runs well and idles very smoothly , and is sitting on its own carriage. Will do some video over Xmas.

Cheers.
