So if You Found a Wallet?

Amazing thing is, my wife and I were just discussing this today because of a segment we watched on the TV news today. I would attempt to contact the owner. If I was unable to do that I'd turn it in at the local police department. At the point I'm at in my life, I don't need anyone elses money. I know how hard it was to get where I am.

Reminds me of a wallet I once found. I was walking with my (very) young son to the park, and found a wallet. Wanting to teach him the value of honesty, we looked thru it for some ID. Got home and checked the phone book, (pre-internet) and called the number at the address. Seems a young lady lost it, and would appreciate its return. I drove to her home, turned the wallet over to her father; and he said she would be in touch. She came to my house a short time later, thanked my wife profusely, as I was not at home, and asked if she could buy me a bottle of scotch for my trouble. My loving wife said, No, he doesn't drink scotch. Never told her my booze of choice was bourbon. So much for honesty.

I was walking out of Walmart right before Christmas a couple years ago and found four crisp $20's folded in half. I went back into the service center and told the lady that I'd found some money and left my number. Next day an elderly lady called and said she'd lost $80 in brand new bills. She came by the house and I thought she was gonna kiss me on the mouth. She told me that the money was all she had left for groceries for the rest of the month.

While on vacation out west, we stopped at Meteor Crater. When we left we stopped at the nearest gas station and found a wallet with money. Couldn't get a hold of the guy who lived in New York for a few days. Told me to keep the money just send him his wallet. Didn't want to send money through the mail so wrote him a check for the amount he had. He was a very happy guy, as I would be.

I would give the money back no matter how much there was. Cajunz, great story but I would be concerned that unidentified cash would somehow not find its way back. You and the Wal-Mart employee did a great thing. I have found money in parking lots, the most was $20 and kept it.

Remember, he didn't leave the money at Walmart; only his phone number and told them that he'd found money without disclosing the description/amount if I'm reading it proprely. That would make it difficult for anyone but it's rightful owner to claim it. If that person didn't call after a reasonable amount of time he'd have likely kept the money. What other choice would he have had? Edited by sblake01

sblake01 is right. I didn't tell the Walmart employee how much I found. I just told her that if anyone came in asking about the cash to call me. The elderly lady woman was so grateful to get her money back and it was a good teaching experience for my kids. I lost about $400 in cash at the Mall one year at Christmas and never got it back, so I know what it feels like.

If I found a brown bag of unidentified cash....that's a different story. ;)
I used to think that too until I watched No Country for Old Men. I don't want to meet Anton Chigurh.
Either that or it could be a setup like we saw on the TV news. i.e. the bag is being watched by a news crew in a nearby mini van ready to pounce on you and get you on video as soon as you pick the bag up.
