It looks like wood. Try running a sheet rock screw into it and pull it out.

Or a decking screw, I always call wide threaded screws sheet rock screws. Use some socket extensions with a 1/4" socket and put a Phillips head driver in it. Then maybe lasso a wire around the screw and pull up?

That is a wedge that's used to hold the timing chain tensioner in place. It's described in the engine tear-down procedure in the FSM. If you had planned to only remove and re-install the head, you would have inserted that before removing the head. Not uncommon for people to forget about them and re-assemble the engine. Someone has had the head off before.

Now you'll need to check the engine for termites. That L28 is looking more enticing.

I see that you stuck your wedge back in. It may be too late though, the tensioner is spring-loaded to get it started on the chain with hydraulics for running. When you pulled the old one out the tensioner probably popped out of its hole. You might not be able to get the sprocket re-installed, if you planned to re-install the head without removing the front cover.

What am I looking at $$$ wise for parts to rebuild this L24? Lets say worse case.. Pistons and all?

Looking at your post #60. The first photo of the cylinder and piston top show hone marks or should I say manual sanding of some sort on the cylinder wall. This engine has defenitly been pulled down before and it lokoks more like a shoddy job to try and get it going.

If its already oversized, the pistons are generally stamped on the top. Its hard to see with all the carbon deposits, but the is a couple reasonably clean and I can't see anything on them.

Yes it is,

I cranked the L24 #1 cyl by hand 1 rev to see where it landed compared to the L28... 20 psi was it vs. 35psi on the L28, Then pulled the remote start trigger and got 35 and then 70psi.

I tried to shove the wedge in earlier but it wouldn't wedge, like something was holding it back... Tada...

Hey, I really appreciate the advice and help you guys are giving! I'm used to the Seadoo jet ski forums which i'm very familiar with building and doing custom mods, etc.. Well, now i'm on the other side of the fence now asking the questions.... Love it!

I might just grab that L28 or the L28/5 speed combo and take a chance, worst case scenario is i'm out 400.00 and gain some knowledge for next time..
