I'll break into his house and swap carbs later this week. Don't tell him, I want it to be a surprise. ;)

Mums the word. Haha! LOL

I made a what was supposed to be a one time use die to cut out the large center hole for the carb to manifold gaskets. Well, I've made about eight gaskets using that die as a starting point, and it's still going strong. Would you like me to punch out a few for you guys just in case the gaskets pull apart when you do the swaps?

I could have them to you before the end of the week...

UPDATE:

I was unable to get any work done on the datsun Sunday. But I did place an order for a nice little L-series present from Datsun Spirit. Eiji said that should arrive in 2 months. The L24 in my car is living on borrowed time. So the way I see this, we have 2 months to figure this out.

I am having an L28 long block built by Eiji. I think he has spec'ed me a N42 block with an N42 head. Nothing crazy. NO HP figure was mentioned, or asked for. As long as its free breathing, revs nicely, and has good idle quality I am happy. I will most likely put Weber 40mm or 45mm DCOE's on it, and a Mallory ignition.

Part of me wants to go ahead and order the Weber set up now so I can try them on the L24. But I would wager that it would be silly to buy 40mm triples for a stock L24 and expect them to work on a high compression decent cammed L28. And I would imagine that 45mm DCOE's would be WAAAY to much for my L24.

My plan is to slowly take my L24 apart on the side, and bring it back to life slowly. I want to keep the original engine available with the car.

If you a going to go with triples I see no reason not to put them on your current motor now. I have run my mikuni 44's on both my stock l24 and my rebello l30. They run equally well on both. I was surprised and delighted to find that no rejetting was needed when moving between motors. As long as you keep the choke size reasonable (I ran 34s) they should be very streetable.

You're going to love the new set up! My N42 combo is fantastic - the power band is excellent with my cam and the carbs are a total blast everytime I fire my car up. You will not regret what you are going to do, other than you didn't do it last year! I did check my MPG over the weekend and I'm currently getting 20+ MPG with some spirited driving.

Step 1: Buy used set of Webers

Step 2: Slap on said Webers to L24

Step 3: Drive

Step 4: Install L28 with said Webers

Step 5: Enjoy!

You even have a wideband installed already, making tuning the Webers a piece of cake! The beauty of Webers is that you can make them work well on all sorts of engines, akin to the programmable EFI of today. I run 40s on my L24 and would have no problem using them on an L28. Some mild tuning would be involved, but the wideband takes all the guesswork out of it.

I see nice used sets in the $700-800 range seemingly all the time. The DCOE is a pretty robust design, using ball bearing throttle shafts and piston-in-cylinder accelerator pumps. It shouldn't take more than some elbow grease and maybe a few gaskets/O-rings on a set that hasn't been beaten to death. Nothing, except a set of ITBs, beats some old school triples snarling at the command of your right foot, IMO!

I just had a 30 minute talk with Eiji, and he is a true character and a stand up guy. I have all the faith in the world he will do a great job for me. He seems very good at listening and taking what I truly want to heart.

He said I should go with 40mm , and yes, LeonV, you read my mind. Get the Triples set up and running on this car, then move them over the L28 later. I will be ordering 40mm webers VERY soon.

I welcome any jetting recommendations via PM soon.

We will see once and for all if my SU's were the culprit. I am willing to bet with the webers my lean running issue is gone.

I will get a low pressure fuel pump as well, and get that working. I will install a regulator so I can dial the pressure up or down for the SU's or the Webers.

I will need to find a heat shield though.

Let the fun begin!!

I will still run a fuel pressure test on my current engine and a voltage the coil test while I am running. I am making electrical jumpers and a fuel line for these tests.

For anyone running triple Webers, I recommend joining the "Sidedraft Central" Yahoo group and browsing the collection of great information.

FWIW, I'm running just a stock mechanical pump on my Webers and no heat shield, although I've been meaning to make one. I don't know if you remember, but the new Webers (40DCOE 152) have relocated progression holes which may cause a problem (either high idle to maintain good driveability, or normal idle and lean spot on throttle tip-in). Some have drilled a new hole further downstream and plugged the original first hole with good success. This is documented on Sidedraft Central and probably on HybridZ as well. The 152 is nice for the fact that there are bypass screws which let you equalize two thoats of the same carb. This is a good feature.

Good luck!
