Exterior Paint Color

So I think I have settled on the 110 even though I really want the car to stand out against other red cars on the road. I think it still will. I like the orange tint but just am not sure about the 198 color.

If I have searched properly I beleive this means that I need to get ppg 72000 paint. Can someone confirm. Also, I know very little about painting a car, really not good even painting a wall in my house. Is this a two stage paint and if so what does that really mean. What clear coat should I get and does it really matter. I know this is crazy but I may be doing most of the painting myself. I know a guy that paints cars well and he is going to walk me through the process and more than likely do a lot of the work. I just want to have my hand in the middle of every part of this restoration.

Thanks in advance.

I painted my car with single stage ppg shopline. I was on a budget. Some will swear by two stage as you can color sand and buff it out for more depth and gloss.

I am not disappointed with the job I did considering am not a pro body guy and I was not going for a showroom finish.

It's up to you and youre budget.

I know it may be difficult to tell for sure but for those out there that are body guys how would you repair the damage in the attached photo. This is really the only real body work that needs to be done on my car before painting. I am hoping that I do not need to get a new hood.post-24101-14150819333578_thumb.jpg

Your gonna get blasted.....no......I'm gonna get blasted. I'm working on a 10/70 z with a super straight body that anyone would kill for, but I am doing a budget rebuild because I am a cheapskate, I'm not the richest man in the world and mainly because even if I put a bad arse paint job on it and spend a lot of money doing it, I will find the smallest inperfections in the paint and it will drive me crazy. I know I'm just sick like that, so here's my solution. I'm gonna follow the latest car craze and wrap it! 3m vinyl wrap and I tell you why. It's different, it's cheap, it has consistant color with no flaws, there are tons of different colors available and most of all, it's removeable. I know it's blasphamy to some hardcore Z guys but hey, save your money for your motor and suspension and think about the wrap. Check out some Youtube videos on 3m vinyl wrap. I'm going with the army green with Rota RB's, should be pretty cool.

Interesting that you mentioned wraps. I checked into this a little a couple months ago but the cost I got was about $4,000. What cost are you getting for wraping? Do you have someone in the area to wrap or is this something you can do yourself?

Thanks for the advice but not sure yet. I have someone that will paint my car for about $1500.

I have never done any hammer-on-dolly work and very little dent repair work of any kind. Will I be able to get one type of dolly and one type of hammer for this job based on what you can see from the photo. Also where can those type of tools be purchased? Are they expensive? I will check around.

I am not really sure I can get to the back side of the hood. I will need to look. Sorry not with the car right now.

You can check ebay for different sizes of 3m vinyl tape. My brother in law was sent to Michigan by his company to do some training at 3m and got certified by 3m to do some wraps, so he and I will get after it when its time. But by what he says, its not really that hard to do. You have the film/tape/wrap section to fit the say door for example, heat it up with a heat gun, stretch it over the body part, fold the excess underneath and thats it. Check out some youtube videos and ebay for prices on 3m vinyl tape. $4000, I don't think so. I checked at my local English Auto Paint store the cost of paint and supplies to paint my car. I was going originally to paint it the lime green color from a new dodge charger, like Big Phil of youtube fame, and the supplies were aroung $1500 just by themselves. Way to much for me.
