December 1, 201113 yr comment_373345 Duffman is talking about the speedo drive gear in the tranny housing. This was a good refresher post though. Went down and checked the one in my tool box. 18 tooth blue one. I know, doesn't count for sour owl feathers......Seems like NISSAN supplied the last time I was looking. December 1, 201113 yr Author comment_373355 You are correct, Bruce, am looking for the speedo pinion gear with 21 teeth. Looks like I can get one from Courtesy Nissan in TX. Question: will I need a different housing for the 21 tooth pinion gear versus the 19 tooth pinion gear? Thought I read somewhere that I would need a larger housing. December 1, 201113 yr comment_373358 This site seems to say that you can install the cog in any housing and the housing is dependent on the year of the tranny not the number of teeth.http://datsunzgarage.com/engine/ Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/41523-best-source-for-purple-21-tooth-pinion-gear/#findComment-373358 Share on other sites

December 1, 201113 yr comment_373404 The thing I've found is the housing should take any gear but the orientation will need to change to accomadate the larger or smaller gear depending on the number of teeth. I know when I was dialing in the speedo on the Fridge w/the 3.9 rear end to the ZX box, I found the gear with the right number of teeth to make things right but had to cut a new locker slot in the mount to hold the correct orientation based on the new gear size. A gear with more teeth will be bigger and fewer teeth will get you a smaller gear. Once you get what you need for a gear and get in there, you'll see what this all means once you start rotating to get good gear contact, drive gear to driven gear.
