I am having a hard time finding a new master for my 71 series 1 and have noticed that the one for the series 2 is a little different and alot easier to find (also cheaper). does it matter which one I get? The only ones I can find for my car are on ebay and range from 2 to 300 bucks.

Yes, you can use the later master cylinder, but you need to swap the outlet lines front to rear.

I don't think it matters which line goes where. I'm currently running mine front to back.

When i put the later style on my '71, I swapped the lines so that the proper reservoir fed the front brakes which provide the bulk of the stopping power. Seemed like the wise thing to do at the time.

I recently bought the early M/C from my Nissan dealer.......try Courtesy in Texas if your local dealer can't find them. Price was in line.

It does matter which output on the master cylinder is used for the front and rear brakes. The rear (drum) brakes require a residual pressure check valve which is built into the mater cylinder. If you uses this for the front (disk) brakes they will drag due to the residual pressure and cause problems. Also, a somewhat lesser issue is the brake fluid reservoir volume. The front brake reservoir is larger to accommodate the slave cylinder (caliper) piston travel as the brake pads wear. If you use the small reservoir for the front and do not add brake fluid as the pads wear you could run out of brake fluid and get air in the system causing brake failure while driving.
