researching a VIN

I used to own a '75 280Z. Was stationed in San Diego in '86 and that is where I traded the car for a needed Ford truck at the time. Trying to locate the car that I originally owned but do not have the VIN. Has someone been down this road before and have advice on locating it. I am sure that my name and/or DL is tied to that VIN in a database somewhere. Hopefully can cross reference that with the VINs supplied by on here to locate the current owner.

The NC DMV was of no assistance.

I think it is going to be very difficult to find. The place to start would be with who did you trade the car for the truck with, try to find that person and the trail of the car will start to come to light. I owned a 78Z from 1991 until a few years ago, but I still know where it is.

i believe it will be a long shot, but who knows.

i traded it in at the Ford dealership in National City (I think) and have been trying to contact them.

Short of posting your story on every web site and message board related to Zs and hoping someone can supply the missing pieces, I think you're SOL. You don't know the VIN so you probably couldn't confirm the identity if you did find a candidate, it's unlikely the dealer who got your Z has 25 year old records or would release information, if they did, due to liability. Perhaps that Z should remain just a pleasant memory of a bygone time.

The Ford Dealership in National City is Perry Ford now, it was another name back then. Like Dennis said, I think this car will go down as a pleasant memory; there will be no "Is that my old Chevy?" commercial momment for you and your old Z. If you persist and do find it I for one will be very impressed.

If you have any old records in a box or drawer, maybe you can find the insurance card and it should have the vin# on it.
