Just bought '72 240Z. Using a lot of gas?

Hey guys! New to the forum! I just bought a 1972 240z. Its got a dual weber carb setup but they both need cleaning. It runs and drives. Right now I still need to clean the gas tank because gas has been sitting in there for over 5 years. Im running gas out of a gallon milk bottle. I took the rubber hose that connects to the fuel rail coming from the gas tank and put that in a plastic milk thing and also put the return line in there too. It used a whole gallon of gas just driving around the block. I was in 1st gear the whole time because i couldnt get enough speed to get into second without it bogging down. (carbs need cleaning like i said) im not sure what RPMs i was at (tach's broken). I was probably at 5 or 10 mph. Should it be using that much gas? Whats the problem?

Thanks guys!

:)

I have never seen a dual WEBER setup in a Z car before so what you are giving is somewhat vague. No it shouldn't use that much fuel and chances are if it was sitting that long the carburettors probably need to be rebuilt with all new internals. Easily done though and not all that expensive. Or maybe consider investing in a set of Skinner Union's. Without actually being there to see and perhaps smell it is not easy to diagnose. Continue troubleshooting and keep us posted on the progress

I have the dual Webers, and like yours, mine sat for many years. Both of the floats were stuck in the open position, dumping gas in the engine. Check that they aren't dripping. Mine was pouring so much gas that I had to change the oil after fixing the carbs.

Hope this helps.

You're kidding right? You've got so many other serious issues with the car right now ("I'm running gas out of a gallon milk bottle") that fuel mileage is the last quesiton you should be asking here with your second post. Get the car operating properly first.

Maybe it would if they could read it. Hard to tell with the misspellings, bad grammar, improper terminology, .....starting to wonder if this is like the one we had a couple of years back that was just a 'put on' the see the reactions. avsbis.gif Edited by sblake01
