Posted January 2, 201213 yr comment_375991 Going to purchase a 240z in the next couple months once I get more dinero and am going to swap a sr20det into it. I know there are a lot of threads about sr20's but haven't found the answers I am looking for. I am going to purchase the motor from Nagasaki JDM Motors located in Canada for $1700 with shipping. Being new to the game, (only 18yrs old) what else should I look for/buy for swapping the sr into this Z?? Any advice/tips would be amazing. Thanks for reading P.S. a 74 260z with 182k miles for $1.5k too good to be true!?! January 2, 201213 yr comment_375996 Have you given any thought to the electronics/engine managenent that goes with that engine? Or the necessary modification needed to the car's fuel system. January 2, 201213 yr comment_376030 Being fuel injected, that engine will need some kind of engine management, either stock or aftermarket and the components that go with it like O² sensors etc., you'll need a fuel injection type fuel pump, higher pressure fuel lines, the various dampers, filters, etc. Look on Hybrid Z. You'll likely find more info on this swap there than here. January 2, 201213 yr comment_376047 The Datsun L24, L26, L28 is a fabulous engine. I would do a quality overhaul on what you have if it were me. If you feel like you have to transplant an SR20, like SBlake said, you will find a multitude of information on Hybrid Z.Good Luck! January 2, 201213 yr comment_376070 Another set of qualifiers to consider are the other pieces of the drive train. That short stroke L-20 Z with the 38mm Hitachis is from what I understand a pretty neat set up. But from a driveabilty setup because of the short stroke engine, isn't the tranny gearing and the rear end gearing entirely different than what you would start with in the 240 etc? So what I'm driveing at is in order to be happy with than buzzy SR and expect it to pull a Z comfortably, I'm thinking you'll be swapping out more than just the engine and harnesses. Don't know but I'd guess the SR won't bolt up to the Z tranny so you would more than likely be needing to fab an new tranny mount, make a new driveline, match up an SR Speedo drive to the Z speedo. Of course you'll be needing to build a new exhaust system too, oh and motor mounts and adapting a cooling system to the SR. If it were me and a turbo set up was the flavor of the day, I'd put better money into finding a good running 280 ZX Turbo and making it the best you can make it. At least that setup was engineered fr4om the ground up as a unit.I'd bet if you asked any engineer at NISSAN about this swap idea they'd say to forget it. January 2, 201213 yr comment_376080 If you are already short of dollars to buy the CAR , then I doubt that you will ever have enough to finish swapping in a SR20det.What everyone said. Stick with the L series . Brilliant engines. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/41804-sr20det-swap-in-240z/#findComment-376080 Share on other sites
January 2, 201213 yr comment_376093 Hybridz is a better site for this type ? and searching! Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/41804-sr20det-swap-in-240z/#findComment-376093 Share on other sites
January 2, 201213 yr comment_376107 The SR20DET is a great engine and would be right at home in a Z. However, you need to buy a front clip of a JDM S13,14 ~ $2500. Basically a complete car from the trans tailshaft forward. That gives you everything you need...except about another $2000-3000 of mounts and driveshaft and a dozen other things including a 4.10 rear diff to go with the 5 speed from the Silvia. If you start with just an engine then are setting yourself up for failure. Your will spend a fortune on all the bits and pieces needed. If you are serious then, as others have already suggested, HybridZ has all the info you will need.Steve Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/41804-sr20det-swap-in-240z/#findComment-376107 Share on other sites
January 3, 201213 yr Author comment_376118 I'm planning on buying the sr from osakamotors or nagasaki jdm motors, around 1.5k. The swap comes with everything besides the motor mounts...I believe. I figure that I'll have enough for the swap anyways by summer. If the swap is too pricy, won't it be about the same for the 280zx swap? sr from nagasaki http://www.nagasakijdmmotors.com/catalog/sr20det-complete-swap-p-118.html Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/41804-sr20det-swap-in-240z/#findComment-376118 Share on other sites
January 3, 201213 yr comment_376199 From what I have read, for around 3-4 grand you can have Rebello blueprint and stroke out an L28 and get you to roughly the same spot. Others here have done it and would know for sure. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/41804-sr20det-swap-in-240z/#findComment-376199 Share on other sites
