I understand what you are going for but you are 18, and short of money. An SR swap sounds nice and romantic, and tantalizingly powerful, but that is the type of project that one attempts after he has turned a few wrenches. There will be NOTHING plug and play about the swap. You will need fabricators, automotive electrical experts, tuners, etc.

You have not even mentioned the condition of 74 260Z. How are the brakes, the transmission, the rubber on the car, the suspension, the tires, the existing electrical, etc. There is probably 1500 dollars of work to do just to get the car safe for the road. Much less a powerful SR20.

I know exactly how you feel. You are 18 and want something special and different that is fast. But you are day dreaming about putting an SR into an old datsun that was never designed for it. Driving off with that set up functioning reliably is step 16542, and you are on step maybe 3. Do not underestimate the 16539 steps in between your dream and where you are now.

For less money you could have an L series engine rebuild and running and reliable making about the same amount of HP. I know it will not have the cool factor of an SR to your friends. But the coolest thing ever is being able to get into your Z and DRIVE IT. Not sitting at home reading super street dreaming about one day finishing it.

My sage advice should you choose to listen:

Inspect the car

IF the car is running and driveable, buy the car

Redo the brakes first, and check the cooling, fuel system, etc

Make sure you have good tires on it.

If the car is cosmetically okay, make it reliable on the L series.

If you have any money left at all, save up for your SR swap. You will have a reliable driver in the mean time that you can enjoy.
