Pilot bushing replacement

bronze bushing. i tried with the clutch centering tool (and grease) and with a socket and extension with grease....

Although others have had good luck with that method, I have not. As mentioned in other posts, I use a small chisel and a hammer, AND A LOT OF CARE. I gouge two grooves into the bushing, avoiding damaging the crankshaft and then use a small screwdriver to "pick" the pieces of bushing out of the hole in the crankshaft. It seldom takes more than 10-15 minutes to accomplish, but CARE is more important than SPEED when I do this.

Good Luck, and take your time if you try this method

If your slide hammer has a puller , just use one and pull it that way . What Bambi said about the grease and socket works , what he dident till you is that the socket you use must just slide into he hole . so when you put the socket on the extention backwards it makes a sort of plug and when you tap on the extention the grease forces the bushing out . I would use the chisel as a last resort. gary :rambo:

I think that was explained earlier in the thread.

If you don't want to try the hammer and chisel method, pack the bushing with grease, find a socket that just barely fits into the bushing. Install the socket backwards on an extension, then tap (hard) the socket into the grease filled bushing to compress the grease and force out the bushing.

I have tried it multiple times and it's never worked for me, but I know several people who have had success with it. So it's worth a try, but it doesn't work for everyone.

I'm so used to the hammer and chisel method that I don't even bother to try the other method anymore. Once you've used the chisel method a time or two, it's no longer a worry as you know the pitfalls and you simply avoid them.
