wa5ngp Posted February 10, 2012 Share #1 Posted February 10, 2012 My callipers are sticking on my 73 240. I remember rebuilding them a long time ago and it was a pain. This time I'm thinking about just using them as a core and buying a pair of rebuilts. Anyone have any experience with the rebuild callipers from Autozone or Advance?tks
Willoughby Z Posted February 10, 2012 Share #2 Posted February 10, 2012 All the big box stores are going to sell the same brands, with the exception of AutoZone (house brand=Duralast) Brands like A1 Cardone, Raybestos, Beck-Arnley, Fenco, etc. are everywhere. I believe they will all be reman. units. IMO, comes down to best seller warranty. When it comes time for a front-end overhaul, I'll be going for the caliper overhaul, with replating, as described in this thread... http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?42542-Brakes-Restored!-Not-just-rebuilt
Diseazd Posted February 10, 2012 Share #3 Posted February 10, 2012 I bought a four piston Toyota caliper and pad kit from MSA for $379.95 , and never installed them ( PART NUMBER 24-5700). I'll let em go with stainless steel brake lines included for $200.00 plus $25.00 shipping. PM me if you're interested. Guy
d240zx2 Posted February 10, 2012 Share #4 Posted February 10, 2012 I rebuilt my calipers and didn't find it too difficult at all. Shortly thereafter, I upgraded to the Toyota calipers. Pretty simple either way you go.
Mike W Posted February 10, 2012 Share #5 Posted February 10, 2012 Same here on the rebuild. I just finished completely rebuilding mine including a replacement of the original pistons. I sourced the rebuild kits from Rock Auto and purchased the pistons from a seller on eBay. The rebuild kits were from Dorman I believe and they included the 2 flat o-rings that are needed to seal the 2 halfs of the caliper together. The pistons were from Raybestos. The only real trouble I ran into was removing the four bolts that hold the caliper halves together. I ended up ruining the head on one of the bolts although did successfully remove it eventually. It was a little difficult finding replacement bolts as the head on them is smaller than normal and they apparently conform to the Japanese spec called JIS. You may be able to get these directly from Nissan, but I finally was able to source them from an on-line company called Belmetrics who specialize in metric size hardware.Mike. wa5ngp Posted February 11, 2012 Author Share #6 Posted February 11, 2012 I should say a bit more about why I'm not interested in rebuilding. Not sure what the problem is but the left caliper totally froze up. :ogre: No amount of pedal effort will make the piston move out. So I'm expecting that could be a headache to get it appart. So I'm gonna chicken out and go recon for now. Totally recond'd and ready to go is only $17 more than the rebuild kit.Yeah, I figured they all come from the same place. Amazing that there is still a big enough market to keep the recon business going.Lately, going to the Advance shop has been a bit more pleasant. They are willing to dig for miscelaneous parts not just want the year model etc. I needed a fuel filter for my boat and he went thru all the frams and found a nice one at a low price. Kinda like the old auto parts places.Don

Wade Posted February 11, 2012 Share #8 Posted February 11, 2012 You mention Advance, I assume you are referring to Advance Auto, and if so do not forget about the online discounts they offer. You can take a nice chunk off the price if you order online and pick up in store. $20 off of $50, $30 off of $75, ect. Just hit up a online discount code site for latest promotions. sblake01 Posted February 11, 2012 Share #9 Posted February 11, 2012 I'd put some Kroil or some other penetrating oil in that caliper, let it sit overnight and blast that puppy out with compressed air.

Last time I did a rebuild on it I had a hard time getting the rubber seals to the right spot on the piston. I'm getting old enough that I just don't have the tolerance for fooling around with stuff anymore. Hopefully that doesn't lead to getting rid of the 240 after having it 35 years. don

I'm gonna need brake pads for them sometime, but MSA isn't very forth coming about what they are. Which ones are the XL calipers? As long as I'm asking, anyone know which calipers are in their rear conversion kit?
