Posted February 16, 201213 yr comment_380916 Just picked one up today. Happy to find an original part for the car. The metal part of the wheel is silver. Not a repaint either. This is clearly originally silver. From all I can gather, this should be black. I'm nto beyond a repaint, but was just wondering if anyone had come across this before. The rest of the wheel is in amazing shape. Thanks in advance. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/42294-series-1-steering-wheel/ Share on other sites
February 16, 201213 yr comment_380924 It appears that a PO has stripped the black paint. After 40 years of use, the paint on my wheel had begun to pit a bit. I had the metal soda blasted then I applied flat black rattle-can to restore the original appearance. It looks spectacular now! February 20, 201213 yr comment_381385 Yeah somebody just stripped the spokes down to metal. You could just polish it and clearcoat it if you want but if not go buy some self etching primer, Krylon Rust Tough Primer and Krylon Rust Tough Satin Black spray paint and just paint the spokes. I did this on mine and it looks great. Idk if youre trying to redo the rim on the wheel too but if you are just wash it with dish soap and dry it really good and then get some gloss clear marine spar varnish and brush it on. I did 3 coats and it looks and feels amazing. The "wood grain" looks so nice.
