Hello All,

I know this may have been covered but I need step by step help that I may follow: As you guys know I am running Mukunis tripple. L24 engine, msa 2.5 exhaust. I hate the fact that everytime I turn the key, it take two, three times to start. I would not have a problem with it if it just when first cold start but even if I get to the store and jump right back in the car it does it. It is embarrassing when everyone looking at the car and when you go starting it, it takes two three or four tries. We checked the timing and adjust and got same result. so it is back to where it was at first. I need help from all Mikunis guys or prior knowledge with this issue. Once in a while it will start on first try even cold but the majority is a lot of try and it is embarrassing for such a beautiful car. Helpppp Helpppp. Next job is to adjust the valves as you can hear.

So I take it that the engine always cranks over when you turn the key, but doesn't always start?

My triple Weber start routine is this:

Cold: pump pedal 3-4 times, crank over and hold at high idle for a bit (start enrichment not hooked up)

Hot: ever so slightly hold the throttle open when cranking over, it starts in one crank when I do this

You may have other issues, but try the simple stuff first.

I also forgot to mentioned, the car hesitate/sputter when taking off on first gear. I have to rev up a little. It will go but act as if not getting the gas, I held the clutch halfway and rev it up and go.

Since I don't drive my Z daily (dammit), I use the following procedure on cold and hot starts. First, I have a Stewart Warner "thumper" electric fuel pump mounted external of the tank at the tank. Mechanical pump has been dismissed. Fuel pressure is 6 psi.

Cold: Engage the fuel pump via the ignition key (one detent prior to start) and allow the pressure to build to 6 psi (approximately 5 seconds). Stab the gas pedal 3 - 6 times (depending on how long the car has sat since driven last). Crank. It fires and runs. Elevate RPM to ~2K for a couple of seconds. Mikuni carbs (at least mine) enjoy a bit of temperature, so I allow the engine to warm while at idle for at least two minutes.

Hot: Engage the fuel pump the same as above. Crank. Off we go.

We will need to know more about your Mikuni set up please...........

  • What size of Mikuni's do you have?
  • Is your L24 modified?
  • What Venturi?
  • Are you dead heading your fuel return or is it returning to the tank?
  • What Fuel Pump do your have and where are they placed?
  • Do you have a Fuel Regulator and what is your pressure set to?
  • Are you running a Fuel Filter(s)?
  • How long have you owned the car with the Mikuni's?
  • Is the air flow balanced?
  • Do you know what your A/F ratio is?

The more info you share the better any and all of us can try to assist..............
