Yea, NASCAR lost me decades ago with the restricted horse power and "all things being equal and safe" mentality. Just because you build a car that can go 300 MPH, dosn't mean the driver will go balls to the walls and kill himself. I think they should return to the "race your brand days" when Petty was the king, and it was all about who could build the best car and handel that car in that type of racing. Not just anyone could have had that title if they were driving a beast like the old Dodge Hemmi. The other brands and teams crying "Thats not fair" got us where we are (like so many other things in the world) I say victory to the strongest, THE RUDE DOG GETS THE BIG BONE and let the puppies and kittens stay on the porch!

All that you need to know about NASCAR is that the record for the fastest qualifying speed in the history of that racing league was set by Bill Elliott at Talladega on April 30, 1987. (212.809)

Yes, you read that correctly: NINETEEN EIGHTY SEVEN! That is before many of the current generation of drivers was even born. NASCAR today is a joke. There are street cars available now that could lap the field with ease.

That's the reason I enjoy watching British Touring Car races... The cars seem to have been bought from a dealership, modified, then raced...just like in the old days of racing in the US.

Here's a link to some of Nissan's entries; you can actually tell what the car was before being converted to racecar form, not what it's supposed to resemble.

Sort of like the 69 Daytona starting line up in the B&G man's video post, real live stock cars racing against eachother and the clock. When men were men and a sport started by bootleggers could still be owned by a tobbacco company. PC is killing this country, (not meant as a political statement, a simple observation......so don't spank me)

You have to be joking,..right? What street car today can run and handle fast enough to "lap" this field? They currently average 160 to 180 mph on the super tracks. That's a "lape average".

That includes letting off the gas in the turns and manuvering traffic. That makes the speed on the straights in excess of 200mph.

I have owned and driven some of the best cars moeny can buy,...and I've never owned a street car that could run at 6000 to 7000 rpms for 500 miles straight,...run an avergae of 170+ mph in traffic while managing 45% to 90% turns.

There are a few cars out there that COULD do it, And yes, you would likely have to rebuild the engine after 500 miles like the NASCAR folks do. And yes, the street car is cheaper to buy. My brothers AMG Hammer comes to mind, and it has leather seats and a cup holder.

Since all the cars are pretty much equal now and have little likeness to cars you buy off the showroom floor at your local dealership, perhaps the racing league should be called NAS-Driver. It seems to be more of a driver's battle than a car battle. The old manufacturers' "Race on Sunday, sell cars on Monday" mentality seems long gone. Where do I get me one of them there cars with the stick-on headlight decals?
