Posted February 27, 201213 yr comment_382259 I just replaced my calipers with some rebuilt ones from AZ. In each box there were 2 copper washers. They do not work with the mounting bolts (smaller diameter on washers). Does anyone know what these are for? My Z is an early 73. Perhaps they are used with other year models?Don Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/42434-calipers-and-2-copper-washers/ Share on other sites
February 27, 201213 yr comment_382260 They are likely brake line crush washers. Though its been a while since I had stock brakes. Hard line from the caliper has no such seal, then the connection to the rubber line to the body doesn't have one either... Maybe its for a banjo style brake fitting for a different car that these calipers also fit? Not sure I'm being helpful here...Okay, in general any connection that does not have a male/female 45 degree flare fitting pair would need this washer, like any place where a flexible hose male end mates to a flat machined surface would need this flat copper crush washer for a seal. Hope this helps. February 28, 201213 yr comment_382389 Yeah I vote crush washer too. Were there little grooves in them or were they smooth? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/42434-calipers-and-2-copper-washers/#findComment-382389 Share on other sites
February 28, 201213 yr comment_382406 Only copper crush washers on my 73 are gas tank drain plug, oil pan drain plug and one each for the huge bolts on the underside of the master brake cylinder. I can't remember on the differential or transmission plugs.Bonzi Lon Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/42434-calipers-and-2-copper-washers/#findComment-382406 Share on other sites
February 28, 201213 yr comment_382409 Don't forget the large diameter copper washers in some of the rear hub assemblies. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/42434-calipers-and-2-copper-washers/#findComment-382409 Share on other sites
February 28, 201213 yr Author comment_382410 OK, well I guess the brakes don't need them. I'll put them in my collection and save for the future. Never know when you will need a copper crush washer. ON a sadder note, now that I got the brakes fixed I think my power booster has a leak. When I come to a final stop I notice the pedal effort gets pretty high and I can hear a slight hiss. bummer. Actually, I don't mind the extra effort as it seems like I can control better but I guess the leak will get worse. This will probably be another thread. February 28, 201213 yr comment_382413 It seems that when you do some brake work, it takes a while for the system to settle. FYI air is supposed to enter (and possibly exit) the back of he booster from the cabin. In fact there are stacked felt washers in the entrance that "silence" the air into the booster (as well as filter dust from entering and accumulating inside).
