rebuilding an Auto tranny

Charles, Without knowing what your skill level is, I would suggest that you look into having a local Trans Shop do a bench job for you. Automatic Transmissions - especially old ones like these can be complicated and real pain. Just my 2¢....

Skill level is not the issue, time might be... If I can find the manual for the technical aspects ie. disassembly techniques and torques, etc. The rest is not an issue. The other side of that is there are probably very few tranny shops willing to work on a 40 year old 3 speed in my area...

Charles, I have an excellent source that might be able to get a hold of the service manual for you. Here is a link to a company that specializes in the Jatco 3N71B transmission that was used in the 71 240z (If I am not mistaken): http://jatco3n71btransmissions.com/. Apparently the Jatco 3N71B was used in a whole hassle of vehicles besides the Z. Make sure that you use the tabs at top of the page to navigate, especially the FAQ tab. I will post more if I find any for you.

The car I have on my rotisserie is a 70 240z with the auto tranny in it. The car is for my wife and she would prefer to maintain the auto tranny. I believe it is the original tranny so I would prefer not to replace it. Also if I go thru the tranny I have; it becomes a know item versus buying something that is supposedly good.

My problem is I have too many spares already. 3 240's, 5 engines, 4 tranny's, 2 diesel cranks, 2 lsd diffs, multiple dashes, etc. Plus if the tranny becomes impossible to fix I can always say "Honey , I had to put a manual in it, I couldn't fix the other tranny..."

patcon have you done any work on that auto trans yet? It's been a year. I too am interested in freshening up the

auto trans since my reverse is slipping really bad. These are great automatics if you don't abuse them.

I bought an extra trans in case i screw up. Im going to put the one i just bought into the car so i can take my

time and drive the car while i try rebuilding the original trans. Im thinking about just replacing the clutch discs, band and seals and put it a transgo shift kit in and install it. For future reference to others searching, the transgo shift kit

is T53165 TRANSGO Shift Kit, N4A-EL The n4a-el is the 3n718 that mazda used. Internally its the same trans inside.

Sorry no, I haven't even thought about the tranny. My wife has been driving a 5 speed miata for about a year and has decided she may prefer the manual over the auto box. I'm good with that. I have also been doing metal work and trying to get paint on the car this spring. Time goes by so fast especially when you have too many projects...
