240z synchros

All I can find there are parts for the FS5W71C & H. Nothing for a FS5C71A or B. Anyone know if you can swap the steel sychro's out for the brass one's in these transmissions?

wariomobile - you might have better luck finding a newer FS5W71B, maybe one that has already been rebuilt. Or maybe contact the Roadster Enthusiast Groups - they may have a source for the steel synchro's or an aftermarket alternative.

Try Classic Datsun Motorsports... http://www.classicdatsun.com/ Les has restored a lot of the older 2000 roadsters. Let him know you are only trying to find new synchro's - but as 5thhorsemann suggests - a positive I.D - or specific trans type is a must. Unless you have owned the car since it was new - no telling what some previous owner has done - the original 5spd. may have been swapped out years ago.

good luck,

Carl B.

Drivetrain.com was able to supply the syncros for the 4-speed for me about 1 year ago. I don't know if the 4-speed and 5-speed use the same syncro or not but you should call them and ask them about what you need. They can likely get other things besides what is listed on their website.

Japanese version of 240z is wide ratio FS5W71B.

I'm about to rebuild same transmission and gather some info on this thread.

I haven't called drivetrain.com to ask 5th Syncro availability yet.

Hope this info helps you.

Thanks,

Thanks again

Just spoke to the people from drivetrain.com, no luck on the synchro for the 5 speed.

Do you mean no luck on the 5th gear synchro or no luck on any of the synchros for the 5 speed transmission? And what information did you get give drivetrain.com? If you told them you needed parts for a 240Z 5 speed, then they probably wouldn't have the parts, because the 240Z five speed is relatively rare, I believe, and unusual. You still haven't confirmed what you have.

Also, drivetrain.com has the wrong numbers on their web site. The FS5W71B is the right number for most of what they call an A or a C transmission. I have messaged them about it, even copied pictures from the FSMs but it's probably too small of a market to worry about.

The 71B 4 and 5 speeds and many of the 71C 5 speeds all use the same 1 - 4 "brass" synchros. 5th is the odd ball synchro but doesn't usually take a lot of abuse anyway.

I have not seen a single case of someone saying that they ordered a rebuild kit, from anyone, and got all of the right parts. I have seen several cases of getting some of the parts and a bunch of extra wrong parts.

zspecialties seems to have some insights and offers some rebuild kits. They could probably help you out. Browse though these two pages, read the comments on the synchros - http://www.datsunstore.com/index.php/cName/transmission-4-manual-shift-4

EDIT! - Maybe even better - search jmortensen and Swepco 201. You might be able to avoid a rebuild altogether. The transmission fluid can have a huge effect on shifting. I bought some rebuild parts and was going to swap synchros from another transmission but using Swepco 201 and a little ATF has solved what were some bad grinding problems. Now I have $50 worth of odd 5 speed parts that I may never use, (but I'm okay with it).

When I was ordering parts for my 4-speed I spoke with drivetrain.com and they seem to divide the 4-speeds into the early type with the 3 pieces housing and the later type with the 2 piece housing. I have the 2 piece type and told them so. The rebuild kit had all the correct parts except the rear bearing for the counter shaft was different. Fortunately I was able to re-use the old one.

Their rebuild kit includes the 4 ball bearings, the pocket bearing, the input seal, output seal and the gasket for the input bearing cover. The syncros are an add-on item.

I ordered the o-rings for the speedo drive, shifter shaft and some other small parts directly from Nissan.

  • 1 month later...

The steel synchro gearboxes (later 2-piece housing type, for Z cars--we're not talking Roadsters) are distinctive due to the rear output is a flange (like the front of a differential) and the driveshaft is a 2-piece sliding unit like a 2000 Roadster). Internally they have the grey steel synchros (they look like rings with a small gap for expansion). They are not interchangeable with the Borg Warner brass type synchros which all US equipped Z's & ZX's (4&5 speed both) came with. I don't know if Les will tell you this--probably only if they are NLA--but the steel synchros are unique in that they can be reused....They can be "flipped". When I had a JDM 5-speed, we rebuilt it that way and it worked perfectly. You can check if the synchros have been flipped before by looking at the shoulder of the ring edge in profile and if one edge is rounded off more than the other, then the non-rounded side is the one that gets re-installed. It's hard to describe, but once you have them out it makes sense. The gearbox I obtained at first crashed in first thru third. After rebuild, it worked great. Put in a quart of 20w50 motor oil and this will smooth out the action. The steel synchro JDM standard & close-ratio "B" type transmissions have a different feel when they are shifted, not quite as notchy as a brass synchro box. Pretty cool.
