Last night I picked up the alternator, it is a rebuilt unit made in TN,not a Chinese part with probable quality issues. It is a rainy day here in the Land of Mary, so the install will happen later tomorrow, keep you posted and I cross my fingers in hopes that this will heal ORANGINA.

If it were mine, I would replace the fuel filter, run the rest of the fuel out of the tank, or as low as possible without being stranded. Remove & inspect the fuel filter, if there is rust debris it would appear its time for a take down and interior inspection. If it has never been done, I would bet it is time.

I did a resto on my tank before I got my '73 on the road. I filled the tank with hot hater and Muriatic acid. I added a liter of acid per tank of water. I let it sit over night on the second rinse and then another good hour soak with very hot water. I also had a piece of heavy welding rod with a flat hammered on the end to help scape up the layer of varnish and rust. Then neutralize with baking soda and water *important step :-)*

then

Treat the tank with POR15 tank resto kit. Just make sure the fuel return line is not plugged with POR15 when you leave the tank to final dry. Its a bastard to clear when that stuff sets up.

Now my tank, she is a beauty! Highly recommended job, just be careful with all those old tired vent hoses.

PS, you will also have to do the filter on the electric fuel pump, they are available and cheap. Same as on early 80's datsun trucks

I had a similar problem that ended up being one sticky float valve. Cool motor and/or low RPMS was fine, but you'd get down the road a few miles, build up some heat, and it wouldn't go beyond 3500 RPM, and it struggled to get there. I went through the same spark and fuel filter checks. Once I pulled them out, it was clear that one of the valves was not particularly free, and must have only got worse when hot.

Maybe something worth checking if you've not already.

I believe that the clog fuel filter was the gremlin , the battery code indicated a 3+ yrs old , so that expense was a valid one.The alternator was not working at full capacity and for 32$+ tax and a life time warranty,a valid purchase.I have driven her for over 100 miles since this episode, runs fine , fill the gas tank with premium gas and will have an eye on the fuel filter and spares in glove box,at less than 4$ is cheap insurance.
