Posted March 24, 201213 yr comment_385211 I am getting an engine built up by Eiji at DatsunSpirit, as most of you know. It will be a medium grind cam on a high compression L28, with triples, and a 9 lb flywheel. Should be fairly zippy. I am going to go ahead and do my Type A to type B tranny swap while I am at is, so a new clutch kit is in order.Any recommendations for this engine on which clutch I should try? Centerforce? Stock? ACT? It should be streetable, and not a full on race clutch. What have others used with a torquey L28 and a light flywheel? March 24, 201213 yr comment_385213 I use the stock L24 clutch and pressure plate with my fully modded L28 engines.......no problem! Make sure you use the L24 collar and clutch arm off of your current tranny, or if you use the new 5 speed collar and clutch arm, use an L28 clutch and pressure plate. March 24, 201213 yr comment_385218 Yeah, a center force pressure plate will be stiff and will probably give your left leg more of a workout than you want for a street car. March 24, 201213 yr comment_385220 I use a stock clutch from a turbo 280zx. I think it's a "Brute" brand. It was less that $100 with bering bushing collar and alignment tool. I got it from rockauto. Feels like the 240 clutch but holds up very nicely to a rebello l30 on the track. Dave rebello recommended it to me. I use it on both an aluminum flywheel as well as a lightened stocker. March 24, 201213 yr comment_385221 I have a low miles centerforce for sale if you decide to go that way. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/42732-clutch-recommendations/#findComment-385221 Share on other sites
March 24, 201213 yr comment_385222 Steve.....Don't you think a 9 lb. Flywheel is going to be a pain to drive in traffic.......the light flywheels rev quicker, but aren't they a chore in stop and go traffic? What's your thoughts after driving both. Just a thought. March 24, 201213 yr Author comment_385225 Eiji said it will not be bad at all with the torque I should have. I have to go with his advice. I had originally spec'ed a 12 lb flywheel. I can still change it if the overall opinion is 9 lbs is too light Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/42732-clutch-recommendations/#findComment-385225 Share on other sites
March 24, 201213 yr comment_385228 My daily driver has a fodenza aluminum flywheel on a stock l24. Never had an issue in traffic. I love the feel of a light flywheel. Makes the car feel zippy. March 24, 201213 yr comment_385229 Put that to rest. Thanks Steve Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/42732-clutch-recommendations/#findComment-385229 Share on other sites
March 24, 201213 yr comment_385232 I run a Center Force II clutch on my 3.1L Rebello and the left leg force required isn't any worse than a stock clutch. FWIW.. March 25, 201213 yr comment_385251 FYI...If you go with an aluminium flywheel, take care when using the stock clutch bolts. On some flywheels the stock bolts will bottom out in the hole therefore not allowing the pressure plate to suck up tight to the flywheel. I ran into this problem myself and solved it by installing slightly shorter bolts. I didn't notice anything unusual when I first installed the clutch as the bolts torqued normally but when I put the car back together the engage point for the clutch pedal was very low. The clutch worked normally but I could never get the engage point adjusted to where I wanted it until I figured out the bolt issue. March 25, 201213 yr Author comment_385267 That is sound advice, Steve...I am not sure what spec Eiji has for me, he send me picture of it, and it had holes, LARGE holes drilled all around the outer circumference. He did not mention if it was aluminum, but at that weight, it would almost have to be. I really want a driveable engine, that is not right on the verge of stalling. I may shop around for one that has a bit more heft. We will see, I am sure I have time to think about it.
