cuts off on me

I have a 71 240z, that cuts off on me whenever I drive just a few yards. It idles fine. I checked the output of the fuel pump and it just sputters at best. I am new to zcars, so is this a problem with the pump or the lines and how do I tell. Should I stick with the mechanical pump or an electronic pump as some people have recommended. I am going to buy it soon so a quick response would be great. Thanks in advance.

Though it's been a while since I had my first 240Z. I believe it has two fuel pumps on it already. One next to the fuel tank on the passenger side is electric and the one on the passenger side in the front on the timing cover is mechanical. Disconnect the fuel line coming out of the electric pump and check the pressure there first. If that seems ok then check the mechanical pump up front. First though, make sure the fuel filter is not clogged.

Good luck!

The 240Z came stock with a mechanical fuel pump.Later as an attempt to stop vapor lock problems an electric pump was also added.I have had many Z's I have never had an electric pump. The mechanical has always done well.I have had to clean and dip the fuel tank and replace the main fuel line from the tank to the engine compartment(not an easy job).I have seen dirty/incorrect air filters cause the problem you spoke of.They idle fine but can't suck enough air under load. You can try without the filter as a test only. daniel

I would recommend sticking with the mechanical pump for reliability reasons. I have gone through lots of electric pumps because they just quit. And when they quit, that is it..they just die. It doesn't matter where you are...yeah, I now carry a backup electric pump with me. Also, if you do get an electric, buy something good from the factory, like a 79-83 rx-7 mazda pump, the one's you get from Kragen/Pep Boys are junk. I don't know if you can get a Datsun electric, but that would be good choice as well.

It sounds as though, your pump is not putting out enough volume for whatever reason, but it is hard to say. Also, my car needed a electric pump since my car runs triple mikuni carbs. Mechanical pumps suits the stock motor just fine.
