alternator wiring diagram for 1973

i recently bought a reman. alternator for my 1973 240z, and the posts on the alternator are different than the old one that i returned to the store. i have the yellow wire with the red stripe that hooks to it and i have two black wires that also hook to it. my problem is that if i hook those 3 wires to the alt. , the battery gets hot. this new alt. has only 1 post where as the old one had 2 posts. so i would like to know how i am going to hook these wires up. the black wires could be ground wires for ?, but i have no idea.- HELP

Sounds like you got the wrong part.Maybe even wrong part, right box.Take it back and get the correct unit.I suggest a 280z NOT zx unit.Thats probably what you have any way. The LT160 (280z)alt charges at a high amprere than the LT150(240z).Also the 240 units have been reman. alot more time.The 280z unit is more avail.and usually cost less.Most stores cross over and give the 280 unit .Some charge you more for a lt150.You know the connector on the lt150 and 160 comes out and the brushes can be replaced cheap and easy that's the advantage of a factory type unit.Aftermarket mostly don't allow this.Usually thats what worn.If your battery is getting hot don't drive the car as the battery can and will explode.The acid does very ugly things under your hood. i took the reman. alt. to a local import shop today, and he verified that it was indeed the wrong part . i then ordered a new nissan alternator from him. i will no longer be buying a remanufactured part for this car again! that reman. alternator was the 3rd one in a row for me in just 2 years, thank god i had a warranty with it so i had only paid for just one alternator. oh , by the way i looked into those english chrome s.u.'s, and i am considering these over new carbs from z therepy. does anyone know which carbs would be best to go with. i currently have on the car 1972 240z s.u.'s instead of the cheap flat-tops that came with the car, but i want new carbs because i will be rebuilding my engine soon and want the carbs to look new again and work like new. - matthew

Seem's nahurry is an excellent handle for you.I 'm afraid english carbs would once again be the incorrect part for you. Z therapy knows whats best.If its the shiny you like that can happen also.Yeah the alt.mess is pretty standard.Like I said.You go in ask for a 240 unit.Those have been around the block and reman. many times.The 280 units.There were more made and they have less reman cycles on them. We all learn. Thats what its all about. Have fun!! Daniel Oh yeah,When you get the new "240" unit let me know if the box reads lt150 or lt160.You know where my bet is....

If you have a 73 240Z, it came from the factory with an alternator that requires an external voltage regulator. The 280 Alternator that was suggested to you would be an internally regulated one and would not be correct for your car. Using that 280Z/ZX alternator would cause problems.

Now, some Previous owners have modified their cars to use the later 280Z/ZX style alternators by removing the external voltage Regulator and modifying the wiring. You need to verify what set up your car is running before you can know what alternator you need. The external voltage regulator is mounted on the inner fender panel oposite the oil filter. If it is there, make sure it is plugged into the wiring harness of the car if you plan to use the standard 73 240Z alternator. If the regulator is missing or not plugged into the wiring of the car, you need the internally regulated alternator from a 280z or 280ZX.
