280Z seat belts in a 240Z

I need some help. I have a set of seat belts form a 78 280Z that I would like to put in my 72 240Z. How do I attach the seat belt retractor to the rear strut tower? If any one has a picture of the 280 and 240 strut towers with out the covers on them that would be great.

the 240Z had the lap belt, with a shoulder strap that hooked onto the lap belt. I didn't think it will bolt to the "tower". I bolted the retractor (early 280Z model) where the "strap" bolted to; next to the hatch above the tower. Then had the end welded to the lap belt end. The only problem is you have to work with 2 locking straps, Lower and Upper. Sometimes it's a pain to get both straps to work together when putting the belt on, but I like having a shoulder strap that retracts. At least until I get my new seats that will use a 5 point harness. Hope this helps.

I believe that you're going to have more problems than this to deal with. The 280Z Seatbelt Retractor assy for the lap belts will not fit in the floor pockets of a 240Z. Just thought I'd bring that to your attention.

The retractors fit fine in the pockets behind the seat. The only problem I have is the mounting point on the rear strut tower. If any one has a picture of a 280 that has the seat belt mounted to the strut tower that would be great. I also need a picture of a 280 strut tower with out the covering.

on zcar.com someone did the following creative sowing.

using the original 240 lap section, they combined it with a 280 2+2 shoulder section. basically he sowed in the 280 section such that he can use the shoulder section.

I kept the lap belts from the original car in place because I realized that the newer style of belt requires a recession in the floor. Therefore, I concentrated on just the shoulder belt. In my car the original shoulder belt has to be adjusted by hand, which drove me nuts. The shoulder belt is attached to the lap belt via a triangular shaped metal bracket that allows the shoulder belt to be removed. Disconnect the shoulder belt from the lap belt, then remove the bolt that attaches the shoulder belt to the "A" pillar of the car.

I acquired a set of 260Z seat belts, which has a retractable shoulder belt assemble that can be bolted onto the "A" pillar without any modification. I next removed the stitching that held the shoulder strap belt on the 260Z belt assembly, keep the shoulder belt assembly and toss the lap belt part. Then remove the stitching that holds the triangular metal bracket from the 240Z belt. Place the removed metal bracket on to the 260Z shoulder belt assembly. Take the new assembly to a upholstery or shoe repair shop and have them re-stitch the 260Z shoulder belt assembly to attach the triangular metal bracket. Then simply bolt the "new" shoulder belt assembly to the "A" pillar and connect to the lap belt using the triangular bracket. You will still have to adjust the lap belt by hand, but now the shoulder belt will allow you to lean forward and adjust the radio"
